Unveiling The Top Accounting Degree Programs

Everybody loves a list so giving you the top accounting degree programs – ten to be precise - seems the right thing to do! How did we come up with this list of great accounting programs, institutions & schools?
The US News & World Report has done a great job and come up with their list of fifty.

But we’ll just look at the top ten accountancy colleges/universities.

The idea is to:
•        Give you an overview of each college
•        Names their business schools
•        Talk about their undergraduate & Graduate/Masters programs
•        Provide some key facts that could help you decide which one could be right for you
So without further ado here we go with the top accounting degree programs:
1. University of Texas at Austin
Not that we like long sentences but it’s actually the McCombs School of Business that houses the Department of Accounting. So what do they offer?
•        The Undergraduate program – known as the Texas Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)
•        The next step up is the Traditional MPA (Master in Professional Accounting) a 12 to 18 month gig that gets you fully ready to take the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exams
•        And maybe you saw this coming, but you can combine the BBA and the MPA (called the integrated MPA) over a five year period to get fully fit to be a CPA
The University of Texas at Austin also tops the list of other publications such as the Public Accounting Report. As you’d expect when you head the list of top accounting degree programs, it’s a tough nut to crack to get admission but the rewards for your accountancy career will be huge.
2. University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
Another long name but another fantastic organisation. Housed in the Department of Accountancy, there’s four key courses on offer:
•        The undergraduate program is called the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BS). And like many of its counterparts it’s no longer enough to qualify you take the CPA exams in Illinois (or other states for that matter)
•        The Graduate programs come in a few more flavours. There’s the Master of Accounting Science (MAS) which is a one year program for students with an accounting undergraduate history. Next up is the Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) which is more aimed at non-accounting students.
And of course, you can combine the BS with the MAS to get you the whole way through to the top of the accounting profession.
3. Brigham Young University (BYU), Provo
One of the oldest establishments in the country. And it’s highly rated by recruiters. The accounting program is part of the BYU Marriot School.
•        The undergraduate program is called the BS Accountancy (Bachelor of Science)
•        Next up is the BYU MAcc Program (Master of Accountancy) which is rated number one by the Public Accounting Report, has very high placement rates with employers and normally takes two years to complete.
4. University of Pennsylvania
Let’s move onto number four in the top accounting degree programs: . And of course we have a very famous name here being the Wharton Accounting Department. There’s a four year undergraduate course or the Accounting department’s MBA program. To be honest, their website is a bit sketchy on detail on their programs and very heavy on accounting theory itself! Interesting approach we say.
5. University of Michigan
Now for the Ross School of Business. The key offering here is the MAcc program which is a ten month course that will have you ready for the CPA. However, for the undergraduate there’s the three year BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) where you can take an elective in Accounting

6. The University of Southern California
What a a fab title for their accounting school! The Leventhal School of Accounting. We like that a lot. And it’s actually part of the Marshall School of Business.
•        Their accounting undergraduate program offers a very distinctive approach which includes the Collaborative Learning Center
•        The Masters of Accounting (MAcc) is a full time, one year program where over 50% of the students have come from an accounting undergraduate background. Some other interesting stats were 51% of the class were women and the average age is 24. Does that fit into the profile of college you were looking to go for?
There’s no doubting that these top accounting degree programs offer incredibly diverse school environments
7. Indiana University, Bloomington
Not as zippy a name as some of the others but the Kelley School of Business still has a strong ring about it and a very crisp and informative website.
•        Their four year undergraduate program is known as the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Accounting and whilst this doesn’t get you over the CPA line they still boast a whole range of top employers such as PwC, General Mills and Motorola
•        However, on the graduate program side of things they have three courses to offer. First up is the Master of Business Administration in Accounting which they refer to as the 3/2 program as you complete the BS & MBA together in five years.
•        Or you can take the Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) which is a one year course. And finally there’s the good old MBA with an accounting major or minor.
Realistically, if an accountancy career is what you’re chasing and you’re still an undergraduate then it’s the 3/2 program you’ll want to check-out.
As you can see, there’s a rich diversity of colleges & universities that make up the ten top accounting degree programs.
8. The University of Notre Dame
Notre Dame operates its accounting program through the Mendoza College of Business. We’ll resist any quips about bells and fairy tale creatures to concentrate on what’s important. There does seem to be a heavy focus on the academic side of accounting which will appeal to many students.
•        These guys refer to an accountancy undergraduate major which is a bit of change from the others – that is they don’t wheel out the “major” moniker too often
•        Higher on up it’s the M.S in Accountancy (MSA) program which gives you the option of two tracks being the Financial Reporting and Assurance Services or Tax. Clearly the former is the best option if you’re heading for accounting departments of public accounting firms
A great statistic we found on their Viewbook was 75% of their 2009 MSA graduates ended up in public accounting firms with 60% in the Big Four. Compelling stuff and what you’d expect of top accounting degree programs.
9. New York University
Their accounting department goes under the banner of the Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Definitely the most words award here in the top ten accounting degree programs!
In their undergraduate college two accounting majors are offered one being a bit more general in nature with the other focusing in on getting CPA ready. Rather worryingly the information on the MBA program (which can be combined with the undergraduate program) sends you to their 2004-5 brochure. Hmm. Perhaps it’s time for a bit of brush up there.
And so we come to the last, and certainly not least, of our top accounting degree programs.
10. University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill
The business school is called UNC Kenan – Flagler. Their flagship undergraduate program is called the BSBA (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration but oddly there isn’t an accounting major so we’ll have to move on quickly to the MAC (Master of Accounting) which is a one year full-time program that boasts 95-100% placements

To create our top 50 list of the best accounting graduate programs in the nation, we took into account the results of four other rankings and the accounting accreditation of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, or AACSB.
Recommended Online Master’s in Accounting Programs

The four rankings come from U.S. News and World Report, Public Accounting Report, Brigham Young University (BYU), and TaxTalent. We put the most weight on the first two because of their reputation and comprehensive evaluation of schools. We put the least weight on TaxTalent’s rankings because they are new and the organization polled a narrow subset of accounting professionals (tax hiring authorities).
All the schools on the list hold business accreditation with AACSB. Most of them also earned accounting accreditation. We put a lot of weight on this achievement because AACSB is the premier accrediting organization for business programs and less than two percent of business schools worldwide are AACSB-accredited in both business and accounting.

#1. University of Texas – Austin, McCombs School of Business

McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas in Austin (UT Austin) is our top school because it is number one in all the rankings we looked at and it is accredited in accounting by AACSB. It’s rare to see a school dominate different rankings with different criteria. This tells us that McCombs is not only the clear leader but is also a well-rounded school.
Graduate Program Overview
UT Austin offers a Master in Professional Accounting (MPA) degree program. If you already have your bachelor’s degree, you can earn the MPA degree in 12-18 months.
McCombs has a dedicated staff that helps students get a job. The staff interacts with recruiters, sponsors career fairs, and creates internships to give students opportunities to advance their careers. The school works with each student to create a custom plan for succeeding in the workplace based on the student’s strengths and goals.

#2. University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign, College of Business

University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign has a strong graduate accounting program. The university ranked third in both U.S. News & World Report’s and Public Accounting Report’s rankings. Also, University of Illinois is leader in research. It ranked in the top five of BYU’s research rankings in the last six and 12 years. The school is accredited by AACSB in accounting.
Graduate Program Overview
The Master of Science in Accountancy at the University of Illinois can be completed in one year. It is designed for both students with accounting degrees and those from non-accounting backgrounds.
The program prepares you to sit for the Uniform CPA exam in the United States. Upon completion, you will have the necessary prerequisites to qualify for the exam.

Also, Marriott School is a top 20 school in BYU’s research rankings.
Graduate Program Overview
Marriott School offers a Master of Accountancy program that boasts 100% placement nearly every year. Among graduates of the program, the average starting salary without a signing bonus is $51,900.
Students can choose between two stems, or concentrations: Professional and Tax. The Professional stem prepares you for a career in professional services. You will take courses in auditing, information systems, and managerial accounting. The Tax stem trains you to succeed in the field of individual and corporation taxation. Graduate Program Overview
Leventhal’s Master of Accounting program is a one-year program geared for a variety of students. In the class of 2013, 59% of the students had undergraduate majors outside the accounting field. The class was split evenly in gender with 52% women and 48% men. International students represented 19% of the class.
The coursework has a strong focus in lifelong learning and globalization. You will learn how to use research databases and industry literature to gain new skills. Also, you will understand global business on a deeper level by examining other cultures.

Max M. Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University has one of the top graduate accounting programs in the nation. The school is ranked 11th and 12th in the rankings of U.S News & World Report and Public Accounting Report, respectively. Also, Fisher is accredited in accounting by AACSB and holds a top five position in BYU’s research rankings.
Graduate Program Overview
The Master of Accounting (MAcc) program at The Ohio State University has a flexible curriculum. Electives comprise 78% of the coursework. You can choose electives from topics such as financial reporting, managerial decision making, finance, taxation, and auditing.

Although Ross School of Business is not accredited in accounting by AACSB, it still makes our list as a top school because of its stellar rankings. The school placed fifth in both U.S. News & World Report’s and TaxTalent’s rankings. Also, it ranked 25th in BYU’s research rankings for the last six years and seventh in Public Accounting Report’s rankings.
Graduate Program Overview
The Master of Accounting program at Ross School of Business prepares students for the workplace. 93% of the students from the 2013 class had at least one job offer. In a survey of the 2014 class, all respondents agreed that the program prepared them for a successful career.
For students interested in passing the CPA test, the school works with you to meet the requirements of your state. CPA candidates from Ross have had much higher passing rates than the national average.
#7. University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School

The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania is one of the most prestigious business schools in the United States. The school ranked second in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings and it placed seventh, fourth, and third in BYU’s research rankings for the last six years, last 12 years, and all years, respectively.
Graduate Program Overview
The Wharton School offers an MBA program with accounting as one of its majors. The focus of the major is the user of accounting data. Students will take courses about the generation of accounting information and the reliability of that information for analysis.
If you are interested in sitting for the CPA exam, The Wharton School recommends enrolling in Tax Planning and Administration and Accounting for Mergers, Acquisitions, and Complex Financial Structures. These two courses will help you pass key portions of the test.
#8. University of Chicago, Booth School of Business

Also, Booth is one of the top research institutions. It placed third, fifth, and seventh in BYU’s research rankings for the last six years, last 12 years, and all years, respectively.
Graduate Program Overview
The Booth MBA with an accounting concentration gives students opportunities outside the classroom to learn new skills and build relationships. For example, you can join the American Bankruptcy Institute Corporate Restructuring Competition to compete with students from other top business schools by providing solutions for a case study.
Sample courses in the program include Financial Statement Analysis, Taxes and Business Strategy, and Cost Analysis and Internal Controls.

Graduate Program Overview
Stanford’s Graduate School of Business offers an MBA program with a degree focus on accounting. Sample courses include Accounting-Based Valuation, Analysis and Valuation for Event-Driven Investing, and Mergers and Acquisitions: Accounting, Regulatory, and Governance Issues.
The student to faculty ratio is 6-to-1 so students can have direct access to the expertise of the faculty. Also, the class size is half of other top schools.

The Master of Accounting program at Kenan-Flagler prepares students to make an impact in the business world. Graduates of the program can pursue jobs such as Assurance Associate, Controller, Financial Analyst, and Tax Consultant. The school enjoys a 98% job placement rate.

#13. Indiana University – Bloomington, Kelley School of Business

Kelley offers a Master of Science in Accounting program that boasts an employment rate close to 100%. (The rate is based on getting a job offer within 90 days of graduation.)

#14. University of Mississippi, Patterson School of Accountancy

Patterson School of Accountancy is a favorite among accounting professors. The school ranked fifth in the rankings of Public Accounting Report. It placed second among schools with 16 to 21 full-time accounting faculty. Patterson is accredited by AACSB in accounting.
Graduate Program Overview
The Master of Accountancy degree at Patterson consists of 30 semester hours. If you hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting, you can complete the program in one year. The following courses are required to finish the program: Cost/Managerial Accounting, Income Tax II, and Seminar in Accounting Theory.
Patterson is unique from other leading schools because it is a separate entity from the university’s School of Business. The accounting school is home to two research centers: the National Tax History Research Center and the National EDP Audit Archival Center.
#15. University of Georgia, Terry College of Business

Terry College of Business is a strong research institution. It ranked 17th for the last six years according to BYU’s research rankings. Also, the college placed 6th and 14th in TaxTalent’s and Public Accounting Report’s rankings, respectively. Terry is accredited in accounting by AACSB.
Graduate Program Overview
The Master of Accountancy degree from Terry prepares students for positions such as CPA or senior accounting officer. The school’s placement rate in 2013-2014 was 97%. About 94% of the 2013 graduates accepted job offers in public accounting.
Terry faculty have been recognized with awards including AAA Auditing Section Outstanding Educator Award and American Tax Association Outstanding Manuscript Award. Last year, the average rating for instructors was 4.59 out of 5. Five of the faculty members are among the most productive researchers (top 5%) over the last 50 years.
#16. Michigan State University, Eli Broad College of Business

According to TaxTalent’s rankings, Eli Broad College of Business is a top 10 school for graduate accounting students. The college also ranked in the top 10 in BYU’s research rankings. Eli Broad is accredited in accounting by AACSB and it placed 15th in Public Accounting Report’s rankings.
Graduate Program Overview
Eli Broad’s Master of Science in Accounting program readies students to become leaders in the accounting industry. The school houses the Ernst & Young Communication Center, a resource for building career development skills. The Center offers services such as mock interviews, resume critiques, and one-on-one consultations.
Students in the program can choose from three concentrations: Information Systems, Public and Corporate Accounting, and Taxation. Also, the program fulfills the educational requirements needed to take the CPA test in Michigan and other states.
#17. University of Missouri, Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business

Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business gets high marks with accounting professors. The school ranked 11th in Public Accounting Report’s rankings. In the category of schools with 16-21 full-time faculty, Trulaske ranked fifth. The school is accredited in accounting by AACSB and it placed 36th in BYU’s research rankings.
Graduate Program Overview
Trulaske offers a Master’s of Accountancy for students who hold a bachelor’s accounting degree or equivalent coursework. The 30 hour program has three required courses: Governmental Accounting and Budgeting, Auditing Theory and Practice I, and Accounting and Business Strategic Analysis. The rest of the degree consists of your choice of business and accounting electives.
For students with CPA aspirations, Becker provides a review course on campus. The course is taught by Becker instructors and Trulaske professors. Space is limited but the course is also available online.
#18. University of Florida, Warrington College of Business Administration

Warrington College of Business Administration ranked 13th in the rankings of Public Accounting Report. The school placed eighth in its category (22 or more full-time faculty). Also, Warrington is accredited by AACSB in accounting and it ranked 27th in the research rankings of BYU.
Graduate Program Overview
Warrington offers a Master of Accounting program with three tracks to choose from: Auditing, Generalist, and Taxation. Core courses include Advanced Accounting, Commercial Law for Accountants, Professional Communication for Accountants, and Tax Professional Research.
The degree is designed to prepare you for a professional career in accounting. Upon completion, you will satisfy the education requirements to sit for the CPA exam in Florida. In 2013, Warrington students ranked 12th in CPA pass rate among 262 schools with at least 60 candidates.
#19. Northern Illinois University, College of Business

The College of Business at Northern Illinois University is home to a graduate accounting program that placed 16th in Public Accounting Report’s rankings. The school also ranked in the top 10 of TaxTalent rankings and it is accredited in accounting by AACSB.
Graduate Program Overview
Northern Illinois University offers a Master of Accounting Science in Leadership. The program equips students with skills to lead and manage a team of employees. Students learn about management concepts and analytical techniques to make effective business decisions.
The program has three tracks: Financial Reporting and Assurance, Taxation, and Managerial Accounting. Also, you can work with an adviser to create a custom track that meets your goals.
Internships are encouraged at Northern Illinois University. For those who qualify, internships are available with reputable companies in the spring and summer semesters.
#20. Baruch College – The City University of New York, Zicklin School of Business

Founded in 1919, Zicklin School of Business is one of the oldest business schools. It is accredited in accounting by AACSB and it placed 44th in the research rankings of BYU. Accounting professors also like the school, as evidenced by its top 20 ranking in Public Accounting Report’s list of top accounting schools.
Graduate Program Overview
Zicklin has two master’s programs in accounting, a Master of Science in Accounting and an MBA with a major in accounting. The MS degree is designed for students with an undergraduate degree in a business field while the MBA fits students without a business degree.
Both programs meet the requirements to take the CPA exam in the state of New York. Students take courses such as Taxation of Business Entities, Advanced Financial Accounting, and Accounting and Auditing Information Systems to prepare for the test.

#21. University of Washington, Michael G. Foster School of Business

Michael G. Foster School of Business ranked 39th in the research rankings of BYU. The school placed 21st in Public Accounting Report’s rankings. In its category of institutions with 16-21 full-time accounting faculty, Foster ranked seventh. The school’s accounting programs are AACSB-accredited in accounting.
Graduate Program Overview
Foster offers a Master of Professional Accounting program with two tracks. Students can choose an emphasis in Auditing and Assurance or focus on the topic of Taxation. The first track consists of classes about financial analysis, assurance services, and business law while the second track covers subjects including corporate operations, estate taxes, timing issues, and federal tax planning.
The program is full-time and lasts three quarters. Also, students have the opportunity to earn enough credits to qualify for the CPA exam in Washington.
#22. Arizona State University, W. P. Carey School of Business

W. P. Carey School of Business is a leading research institution in the field of accounting. The school ranked 11th in BYU’s research rankings over the last six years. Also, W. P. Carey placed 25th in Public Accounting Report’s rankings and it is accredited in accounting by AACSB.
Graduate Program Overview
The Master of Accountancy program from W. P. Carey boasts a nearly 100% placement rate for domestic graduates within 90 days of graduation. The school has a Career Center that works with students to develop custom career plans and provide coaching for job searches.
Coursework includes classes in auditing, forensic accounting, non-profit accounting, financial statement analysis, the relationship between taxes and business strategy, and accounting research.
The program meets the education requirements to sit for the CPA test in California and Arizona.
#23. University of Wisconsin – Madison, Wisconsin School of Business
