Experiment conducted among strangers about playing monopoly game showed that people who were give twice money than others behaved ruder and thought themselves dominant in the game. Similarly, high expense cars’ drivers are more likely to break the rules than those of low expense cars. And richer people, in another experiment, were twice likely to take the candies that were told belong to children. In another experiment in which participants were given equal amount of money, poor people are more likely to share higher proportion of their properties. All of the results show that richer people, in the social hierarchy, are less likely to be empathetic and more likely to cheat, bribe and engage in unethical behaviors.
In the past 20 years, the gap between rich and poor is increasing and there are increasing number of people are impossible to realize the American dream of equality. What the society can do is to cultivate and make small changes among the rich, hoping to inspire them donate their wealth to charity and make the society as humane as the origin.
