1.1-32
It is traditionally believed that the main duty of central banks is to keep the inflation low. Even though it was vogue in the past, now the idea is outdated. As a matter of fact, the truth is just opposite: the inflation is so low that the central banks need to stimulate it. The inflation in Japan is nearly zero. In Europe, the inflation is still below 3 percent.
2.2-33
The extremely low inflation rate has some side effects, and the very serous one is deflation, which can last for a long time and heavily strike the economy. From the experience of Japan, we know that during the deflation people seem to reduce consuming, thus making the situation much worse, even a vicious circle. Even though America and Northern Europe have relatively high inflation, if the high unemployment keeps going on, the economy can still be negatively affected. What's more, the pretty low inflation can make a country less advantageous than nearby countries who have higher inflation, especially in the wages.
3.2-29
Realizing so many problems, central bankers are trying to improve the inflation a bit, but the question is how "a bit" is. Sometimes, "a bit" may turns out to be "a lot". Even if the central bankers announce that their aimed inflation, the result may be just the opposite. One of the things they can do is probably to decrease the unemployment, which can stimulate the economy and in turn rise the inflation rate.
4.2-17
The 16 days government shutdown in the Unites States are highly discussed among people. Some think the shutdown seriously affects the economy by rising unemployment and reducing payment to employees, while others hold the opposite idea that the shutdown actually does little impact to the status quo, considering that before the shutdown the economy did develop well.
5.2-24
As a matter of fact, it is pretty possible that the government shutdown negatively affects the fourth-quarter growth prospect. The author points out many industries' employment. Among them, the education perhaps did best in the third quarter, as a result of the opening of schools. Although those furloughed government employees get their retrospective pay, other people who are related to them are affected by the shutdown.
6.5-27
As we know, the inequality in the U.S. is extremely gigantic. Scholars do some research about it. They find out that if the parents have higher IQ, their children not only have higher IQ but also are access to many high-quality resources, such as top colleges and high-paid work. This finding suggests that IQ can make the inequality much worse than before. However, immigrants can help to solve the problem in some degree. America enjoys a lot of benefits from the immigrants from China, Japan, India and so on. The first generation of immigrants can teach their children to be ambitious and capable to chase their dream. Nevertheless, we should realize that some people who don't make a change in their environment or just stay there may not have the opportunity to make more money.
