In our university, we can have two options for a master's degree. you can either take the thesis one, which requires you to perform a project and write a thesis in order to graduate. Or you can take the non-thesis one, which requires you to take a comprehensive exam for the core courses to graduate. It is not quite difficult, though. Usually students like to take the non-thesis option if they don't consider a further education. If you want to apply for PHD, a good thesis may be helpful.
