The lecturer refutes the three negative influences,which the loss of intelectual stimulation, poor quality of other alternatives and serious writing lack of reader support, cited in the reading passage respectively.

Firstly, the lecturer admited the fact of decline of rate of reading literature, but she don't agree that nothing else can provide intellectual stimulation.Scientific writing, polical analysis also provide very high quality of reading. She argued that the reading passage's assumption that people who do not read literaturewill not recieve intellecture imagination, empathy to others and understanding of language,is ill-founded.

Secondly, the reading passage suggests that quality of other alternatives, such as information in website, self-help books, music, are much poorer than literature. However the lecurer argues that people diverting time to other forms of information rather than literature does not necessitate the decline of the general culture. The time is changing,the cultural expresion is deversified. For example, listening a piece of wonderful music is also a way to appriciate culture.

Thirdly,the author of the reading passage argues that lack of reader support decreases the motivation of serious writers. The lecturers don't agree that readers should be blame.She suggests that the authors themselves should take responsibilities, because many modern literatures written are very abstract and hard for readers to understand.
