The article in a magazine recommends that corporations should look to the city of Helios when seeking new business chances or a new location. In order to support the conclusion, the author points out that the employment rate of Helio was higher than the regional average even in the recent recession. And Helio is an industrial center that has provided more than its share of the region's manufacturing jobs. Furthere more, to attract companies that focus on research and development of innovative technologies, Helios is attempting to expand its economic base. However, the argument is ill-reasoned.
To begin with, the author assumes that low unemployment rate is representative of good opportunities for corporations to choose Helio as a new location. The line of reasoning is problematic. For example, high employment rate can mean many corporations in Helio, leading to fierce competitions in Helios. And it is undoubtful that ferice competition is harmful to the new companies which seek new business opportunities. The author have to provide concrete evidence or impeccable logical reasoing to prove that low unemployment rate is benefical to companies.
Second, the author's assumption is that Helios' plan to expand its economic base means promising prospects for many companies that focus on research and development of innovative technologies. But the author fails to provide evidence to convince that companies delicated to research and development of innovative technologies will run well in the industrial center. And there is doubt that whether industrial center will suit for the development of companies specalized in high-tech and research. The argument is not convincing wihout eliminating those possibilities.
After a closer examination of the passage presented, the argument is not valid as it stands. To buttress it, the author would have to render the connection between the low unemployment rate and the benefits of corporations to locate in Helios and provide evidence to prove that high-tech and research companies can develop well in the industrial center.
