I know the answer 'marking' make sense. But I wonder:

Why not 'The army, whose estimates could not be confirmed, said that the security forces opened fire on a demonstration in Aleppo, which marked a second day of violence in a city that had been relatively calm'?
I remember that 'which' clause with comma can be used to describe the whole sentence before comma i.e. the action that security forces opened fire ... Am I right???

which不能指代整个句子  所以这里的which指代它之前的那个词 这里就是aleppo 无论是哪个词which指代  都有歧义  sc里语义为王 句子格式对 还要看语义通不通 你说的which能指代整个句子估计是记错了  是that可以指代之前的那个分句而不是which
