一道平行题不明白

注意除了not verb...but verb...之外，are...but are...也是一种平行，即not在平行之外.

为什么是are not...but are...平行啊，怎么看我都觉得应该是are not....but...是not 和but的平行啊，but后面不应该加are啊
如果按照 答案写的，那么 我再举个例子， are not caused by but caused by 就应该写成 are not caused by but are caused by了，不就啰嗦了嘛？？

简单来说就是选c会造成句子的ambiguous

there are two ways of reading the sentence if choice c is inserted. here they are, with the boldface in each indicating exactly what is construed as a modifier:

1) Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that many biological traits are not the products of natural selection, （favored because they enhance reproduction or survival），but simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments. --> this is the most obvious reading

2) Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that many biological traits are not the products of natural selection,（ favored because they enhance reproduction or survival, but simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments） ---> counterintuitive if you know anything about evolutionary biology, but grammatically ok -- and therefore a competing interpretation, which is fatal to clarity.

就是说are not ...but...是可以的，但在这里有歧义~~所以用了are not...but are...

不知道我理解的对不对，不加are的话，后面的有可能就都变成了修饰natural selection，but后面的也是，介样子but就变成了介词解释为除了。。。

而文章中想表达的but是解释为连词而是~~

不过还是有一点不明白，如果but解释为除了修饰前面的natural selection，but前面根本不需要逗号啊，。。。

没太懂，你的意思是but之前不用逗号？如果这样子不就和之前的插入语连接在一起了么，那意思还是ambiguous

我一开始觉得，如果句子是but are，也一样可以写成上面这样。但其实是不可以的，如果要让but和favored那句联系在一起，需要去掉comma:
favored because they enhance reproduction or survival but (they) are simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments

按这个逻辑，d的答案去掉插入语后，可以认为是这样的
Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that many biological traits are not the products of natural selection  but (many biological traits) are simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments

这样子的话，are的出现仅仅是因为没有省略?

我认为，如果没有favor的这个分词结构，那么but后面也没有必要有are的出现了
