Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speakers or reformer ever could.
Scandals can focus much more attention on a problem, but if we always depend on scandals to reveal problems or flaws of systems of society, such situation shows the dysfunctional society.
As we all know, attention and discussions can be caused with the shock of scandals. Everyone has his or her curiosity, especially about people in high position. Because of a smile in an accident, Yang dacai, a chinese official, was blamed by people. People were surprised that the guy even can smile when facing the result of an accident. Quickly public attention turned to watches Yang wore.
A problem was be exposed that Yang’s salary cannot be affordable to watches he wore - such scandal made people very suspect the honest of officials, and news everywhere caused the examination of relevant departments. We can see clearly that scandal in that situation has played an important role. It caused the suspect and then turn to the examination and to the improvement of monitoring to the officials.
But scandals are likely to become a tool just to satisfy the public curiosity, like the investigation of private life of celebrity and figuring out what brands of the officials’ clothes are.
Scandals are exposed, curiosity is satisfied, and shocks are caused. But shocks caused will decrease the credibility of the government and officials, weaken people’s sense of safety and trusts - maybe one of things they did in the past will be revealed as a scandal. All of them are not useful to keep the stableness of our society.
So a question we have to ask that what’s the standard of defining “useful”? Is scandal useful to expose the bad side like private life of celebrity?Or is scandal useful to use the problems it revealed to correct flaws in the society system?
In either situation, it is sure that scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speakers or reformer ever could, but it is also obvious that the two situations lead to different results - the former can cause chaos like weakening the faith, the latter can be helpful to the perfect of a society. So I define “useful” as being helpful to promote the improvement of social systems.
When a society needs scandals to make change or cause public opinion, we should think about problems we have and try our best to correct them, whether they are systems of checking, value or dysfunctional running of media. |
