Hi, my friend!Jon Frank here, happy to help. From your posts I can see you actually have two major questions. First, as a student who majored in law, is it possible (or realistic) to apply for MSF programs? Second, will it be harder for you to get a job after graduation?
To your first question, there is no specific requirement of undergraduate major for your application to MSF programs. However, you need to make your motivations and ultimate career goals very clear in the application. When you switch your major (in your case from law to finance), this will be the number one issue you need to address. Also, you may need some basic knowledge of finance in order to succeed in an MSF program. I’d suggest you start with a CFA program, which is a great way for you to learn the fundamentals of finance and make you more competitive.
To your second question, you actually have an advantage for job hunting. The important thing to recognize is what will make you stand out from other applicants. Your law background can help you to better understand some of the policies or problems in financial areas. Thus, if you want to do risk management or quality assurance, you will ultimately be more competitive after graduating from an MSF program because of your background in both law and finance.
Thank you very much for your detailed reply. It's very helpful! Yes, I'm thinking about risk management as my future career, but perhaps more likely, I'd go to financial regulation in gov agency, finance law in law firms or legal works in investment banks. I think a finance degree would add a lot advantage to this career path. But I'm also struggling between law degree and finance degree. Do you think a LL.M + MSF is sufficient for my career goal? (with a LL.B from China). Maybe JD+MSF is the best, but it will take 5 years which is pretty long for me. (And according to my knowledge, there is few JD/MSF joint degree. There are some JD/MBA joint degrees, but it would be too expensive..). Or maybe just a JD can suffice?
Btw, do you prefer MBA or MSF for my career goals?
