Dear prospective students, It is our pleasure to give you an update on the refined language requirements of the MSc in International Management Program (HKUST MIMT). This update is advised by the CEMS Head Office based on the recent CEMS Executive Board Meeting at the CEMS Annual Events 2012 held in Switzerland. The CEMS community always believes that proficiency in three languages is one of the core differentiating factors of the CEMS MIM program and help build a strong identity for CEMS MIM students. With the increase of more non-European member schools/students in the CEMS community, it is recognized that the second foreign language (or third language) is not as common in non-European countries as in Europe. As such, the CEMS Executive Board has re-defined the below language requirements to cope with the non-European regions but keeping its core value.
-ALL students must have three (3) languages, which includes English and a 2nd and a 3rd language. The 2nd language is one of the 25 CEMS languages; the 3rd language can be any language. Either of these languages is the mother tongue. AND -Students entering the program with two (2) languages, must study an equivalent of at least one term of introductory course of a third language at the home term of the MSc program and complete successfully before graduation. The third language is ideally outside the language family of the declared CEMS language other than English. Remarks:
1.CEMS languages include Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Hindi/Urdu, Indonesian/Malay, Russian, Portuguese, Turkish, Dutch/Afrikaans, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Finnish, Irish; Arabic, and possibly later adding Korean.
2.The existing entry requirement on English proficiency remains unchanged and competence is assessed by a recent third-party certification (TOEFL/IELTS) or proof of university medium of instruction in English before admission. Students will also need to complete a dedicated English medium Business Communication skill seminar during the MSc program.
3.Students have to show obvious capability and proficiency in their declared mother tongue. Students can also declare several mother tongues if they wish, however, the declared languages must meet the requirements of the three CEMS languages. Students with multiple mother tongues need to sign an honor statement.
4.Means of language proof for the 2nd language (CEMS language) can be accepted include: Secondary education, university degree, existing CEMS accredited courses, accredited commercial exams, in-house language exam at CEMS schools, European Management and Business Communication (MBC) test, or mother tongue.
5.Means of language proof for the 3rd language (introductory level) can be accepted include all of the above stated in point 4, plus language course during MSc program, accredited commercial language courses, or mother tongue. Students who cannot provide valid language proof for the 3rd language are required to study a language course during the MSc program study.
6.Students already mastering more than two languages may continue to take the current MBC test in the third (or more) language. If they demonstrate capability, this will be formally recognized and included as an additional endorsement on their CEMS graduation certificate. The abovementioned change shall come to effect immediately, applicable to all students enrolled in the HKUST MIMT 2013/2014 intake and following. We believe this update on the language requirement will support your consideration of the HKUST MIMT program. May we once again remind you that the next round of application deadline is 1 January 2013. We look forward to receiving your online application soon.
