1、different than & different from
   看过以前的老帖子,  我总结了一下:
1)different than 后面跟句子或者n.短语,different from 后跟n.短语(老帖子上上说different than 跟n.短语的时候但是意思有所变化,但是我觉得二者基本上没有什么太大区别,至少考试理解时不用理解那么深刻,如:His way of living is different than ours,His way of living is different from ours.这两个应该都可以吧?感觉是一样的。。。)
   2)different from 可以引导同位修饰语,different than 不可以
不知道上面说的这两点说的对不对?这两个词组还有没有什么其它差别?

2)在PREP中关于“前面应被后面替换小结”里有一个:
up until=until(until已经包括了up的含义。

until:conj.(=up to the time when)...时为止;

prep.(介词)Up to the time ofBefore (a specified time):用在否定句)

这个BEFORE用在否定句是什么意思??

3)在比较结构的省略中:
Tina eats faster now than (she) did 10 years ago.这个句子中的did可以省略吗?可不可以和其它状语比较的句子一样省略did呢?还是:因为其他状语比较的句子省略的都是相同的主谓,而这里是eats和ate是不一样的,所以不能省略?

因为在字典上没有提到这些,所以只好求助NN们~~~

1.

I am not quite sure about what you are asking here

but just according my memory in official source (prep07,08 ,OG12,VERBAL)

different than appears to be incorrect because of the incorrect idiom ( different from is the correct one )

2. don't understand what you are asking here

3. I think that is  fine

she eat faster now than when ....

that is the comparison between two time-frame

parallel and no ambiguity

1)因为在字典中可以查到different than,而且有一个老帖http://forum.chasedream.com/GMAT_SC/thread-19467-1-1.html?userid=-1&extparms=Action%3dvalued%26page%3d5(见#8miejue版主的话)上说different than 是可以的。。。
而prep上有出入,一处说不可以,一处说可以。。。GMAT中到底承不承认different than啊?还是出现就一定错了?

3)OG上一道题:
In an effort to reduce their inventories, Italian vintners have cut prices; their wines have been priced to sell, and they are.

(A) have been priced to sell, and they are

(B) are priced to sell, and they have

(C) are priced to sell, and they do

(D) are being priced to sell, and have

(E) had been priced to sell, and they have
答案C

题目很简单,解释为:In the underlined segment, the second verb does not need to repeat the word sell because it is understood from the previous verb phrase priced to sell. However, the second verb must be correctly conjugated with the understood sell. They are sell is not a correct verb form; they do sell is correct.
这里解释的意思是不是就是说省略的动词或者用助动词do/did/does替代的词必须和之前的形式是完全一样的?

那么再看这个句子Tina eats faster now than 10 years ago, 补充完整之后Tina eats faster now than  she ate 10 years ago, eats 和ate的形式是不同的,还可以省略吗?

1. I think different from / different than is just a case of correct idiom

2. tricky question here

I once also got stuck by this issue

just based on what I understand

I think that ate and eat is quite acceptable (simple tense)

but ate and were eating is not acceptable ( you should have eating in the former part)

我自己又想了一下,不知道下面这个解释对不对:
Tina eats faster now than 10 years ago是对的,因为than作为连词,可以连接词与词、词组与词组、句子与句子,它的核心是要前后对称。这里now和10 years ago是对称的,所以是可以的。(此处than是连接了两个时间状语
而OG那道题,than是连接了两个句子,那么V.的省略必须是相同的形式,否则是不能够省略的。

而我举的例子Tina eats faster now than 10 years ago是一个很特殊的例子,因为它强调了now。
如果这里没有now,就不能省略did,应该是Tina eats faster than did 10 years ago.(我不知道对不对。。。求验证。。。)

不知道这样理解对不对?

DUKB,我今天逛帖子的时候又困惑了。。。。望解答。。。。
http://forum.chasedream.com/GMAT_SC/thread-543697-2-1.html
#12 aeoluseros列出的几个句子和相关的解释如下:
Lake baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the great lakes combined
Jimmy ate more than 20 apples today, more than all his classmates combined.
Last year Peking university accepted over 10000 students, more than all the universities in Japan combined.
Class A sent more than 10 students to Oxford university, one of the top universities, more than 5 other classes combined.
前面的比较对象是“Lake baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water”这整件事情,后面就要用同样的事情来平行,而因为谓语宾语都是一致的,所以可以省略,留下主语all the great lakes combined。

这种主谓宾结构的句子,比较从句里居然可以省略谓语不用助动词do/does/did替代。。。
是因为这里有逗号的原因所以不会引发歧义吗?
如果去掉了逗号是不是就必须改成:
Lake baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water more than all the great lakes combined do?(这里holds和do形式不一样,是不是不能用do替代啊?)

逗号的存在是让你更容易理解句子想要比较什么

你不觉得你把逗号去掉了句子很难读吗?

主谓宾的结构,为什么后面不需要补出谓语动词呢?

X ate Y more than Z

当Y和Z不处在同一个逻辑层面的话,是不会造成歧义的

例如说

I ate apple faster than you

这里很明显就是我和你吃苹果速度的比较

不可能是我吃苹果和我吃你速度的比较

只有当Y和Z在同一逻辑层面上,这时候才需要你补充谓语动词来消除歧义
