32fatigue accidents
The following appeared in a memo from a vice president of Quiot Manufacturing. “During the past year, Quiot Manufacturing had 30 percent more on-the-job accidents than at the nearby Panoply Industries plant, where the work shifts are one hour shorter than ours. Experts say that significant contributing factors in many on-the-job accidents are fatigue and sleepdeprivation among workers. Therefore, to reduce the number of on-the-job accidents at Quiot and thereby increase productivity, we should shorten each of our three work shifts by one hour so that employees will get adequate amounts of sleep.”
In this memo, the president suggests shorten the each of our three hours shifts by one hour in order to reduce the on-job-work accidents. To support his or her suggestion, the president points out that the expert saying of the on-job-work accident happened because of fatigue and sleep deprivation among the workers, and that Quiot Manufacturing had 30 percent more on-the-job accidents than at the nearby Panoply Industries plant, where the work shifts are one hour shorter than ours. Several assumptions provided by the presidents could not convince me.
To begin with, the claim hold by the president that the Quiot Manufacturing had 30 present more on-the-job accidents that at the nearby Panoply Industries plant could not indicate that the former had more amount on-the-job accidents than the latter. If we compare the actual overall number of the accidents, we may find that the per-work accident rate would reveal that Quiot Manufacturing is actually safer than Panoply, depending on the total number of worker at each company. Therefore, the president makes a hasty assumption that the Quiot Manufacturing should shift its worker hour base on the fact that Panoply Industries has 30 percent less on-the-job accidents just because Panoply Industries has the one hours shorter work time.
Additionally, even if the Quiot Manufacturing shortens each of their three work shifts by one hour, the amount of on-the-job accidents would not decrease. The mere fact Panoply Industries has the lower on-the-job ratio result from the shorter work time does not necessarily mean that Quiot Manufacturing will benefit similarly from. It is entirely possible that the process production in Quiot Manufacturing is more danger than Panoply Industries’.Also, the training of the workers and the bad maintain of the equipment make accidents happen.Unless the president supplies sufficient evidence to prove it is the longer work time increase the amount of accidents, I could not accept recommendation furnished by the president.
Plus, rely on the experts’ saying that significant contributing factors in many on-the-job accidents are fatigue and sleep deprivation among workers, the president should reduce work time one hour shorter than before. I think, the experts fail to take into the assumption that the worker would not use the extra one hour to sleep instead to play the computer game or some other recreational activities.Besides, there is no necessary relationship between on–the-job accidents and productivity. In another words, decreasing on–the-job accidents does not mean increasing work productivity which has a fixed link with the works’ skill and the advanced equipment. Thus, it is suspicious with the proposed course of action.
In sum, the president does not provide persuasive evidence to prove that the suggestion of shortening each of our three work shifts by one hour in order to letting the employee to get adequate amounts of sleep is a wise idea.To strengthen his/her argument, the president would benefit from implementing a further survey investigating whether the sleep of workers’ influence on-the-job accidents or not. |
