The reading passage and the lecture are discussing the same topic whether ethanol is good to be used as an alternative for gasoline. In the reading material, the author mentions that many people are against the issue considering ethanol as an alternative. However, the professor in the lecture finds none of them is convincing.
To begin with, ethanol does no harm to our environment. Although the emission from the ethanol fuel is carbon dioxide, the main cause of greenhouse effect, the planting of some plants such as corn, a common source of ethanol, actually can counteract the effect. During the growth of these corns, they absorb carbon dioxide as nutrition. As a matter of fact, the producing of ethanol is not harmful to our environment. In this regard, the professor finds the flaw of what is mentioned in the reading passage.
Secondly, the large-scale of production of ethanol will not reduce the amount of food supply for animals. In the reading material, the author proposes that if 10 percent of the fuel comes from ethanol, a great number of animal food will disappear. However, in the listening material, the speaker refutes that the main component of the plants ethanol used is called cellulose. And most cellulose will not be eaten by animals. In fact, many plants can be planted for both alternative fuel and animal food.
Finally, in the future, the ethanol is able to compete with gasoline on the price. In the reading passage, the author says that the low price of ethanol is due to the government’s tax subsidies. In the lecture the professor argues that if there is a huge demand of ethanol, a large number of ethanol will be produced. In this case, when a great number of ethanol is available, the price will decline. The professor also mentions that if three times greater ethanol produces, the cost will decrease by 40 percent. |
