176 Holidays honor people or events. If you could create a new holiday, what person or event would it honor and how would you want people to celebrate it? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
If I were to create a new holiday, I would create Albert Einstein Day in memorial of his great contribution to the world. The exact date should be the date of first publication of his famous work <Relativity: The Special and General Theory>.
It goes without saying that Albert is one of the most brilliant scientists in human history. But why do I choose him to be the one among other geniuses? That is mostly because of the paramount importance of his work. His theory may not be perfect, as we all know some parts of his theory has been adjusted already, but unlike most of other scientists who just ameliorate discoveries of previous people, his work marks the milestone of a new age of science.
At the end of 19th century, most physicians believed that the Newton theory after several adjustments had come to such a mature stage that there were only a few uncultivated areas within physics field. All that they could do was to work on some minor points of the theory that had not achieved perfect accuracy. What they did not expect, was that just because of those seemingly small points, the whole building of Newton Theory was later destroyed by Professor Einstein. This change in my mind is the biggest one after Newton’s theory. It directly leads to thousands of new inventions in the 20th century. Most of the later developments cannot be achieved without the new theory. This man is the reason why science and technology can develop at the present speed which is the fastest ever in human history. Such radical change should surely be memorized.
In order to memorize Professor Einstein, I propose that there should first be lectures in universities upon his theory, both the original one and the present one after several alterations, and his life. There should also be promotions in secondary schools to encourage youngsters to study physics. An Einstein Prize may be established and awarded on that day to those prestigious physicians who made the greatest contribution to physics in the year. The government may also organize some sort of donation party to draw people’s attention to the research and study of physics and to encourage people to donate on relevant projects. Usually, businessmen are unwilling to invest on subjects such as theoretical physics because they are not rewarding in short term. But the government can take the chance of celebration of Einstein Day to promote the importance of basic science because it is the foundation of every new development so as to attract more investment or donation.
The holiday thus can serve two functions. One is to honor the great contribution of Albert Einstein. The other is to use this opportunity to attract attention of the public to the research on physics so that excellent people and sufficient fund can be employed to further the research and benefit the whole world.
