3. Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. Should educational institutions discourage students if they want to pursue what they are unlikely to succeed? This seemingly good intention may have difficulties practicing and at the end of day, will go to a wrong direction of education. This statement holds true to a certain extent. Of course, by giving students advices to help them get successful contributes to the reputation of the institution. This factor, definitely, is one of main criteria of assessing a good educational institution. Besides, students may have better future career outlook if they have chosen a major which is more likely to lead him to success. It helps both the institution itself and the students. However, this statement may not be practical because it is extremely hard to identify in which field that students are likely to succeed. Looking in the job pool, industry upgrading and updating has been faster than ever. The knowledge we are learning today will possibly be replaced tomorrow. As a result, it is vague that which field has the most potential for a successful career. From the students’ viewpoint, they may not be interested in the field that assumed potential. In contrast, they may miss the chance to learn and explore the areas that they truly have passion for. Without passion and interest, no one can be successful at last. More importantly, this statement is not consistent with the mission of education. Education is mainly about enlightenment, which expects the faculties to encourage students to learn and explore whatever they are interested in and curious about. Moreover, if a university cultivates a group of students who devote their academic life only to what will lead them to a successful career, it will ruin civil consciousness and integrity. Success, at the end of the day, is only a byproduct of a fulfilling life. However, the basis that led to the success should be found in university days when they had developed independent spirit, critical thinking pattern and human empathy. Good intention to help students being successful are encouraged in any educational institutions. However, the best way to achieve that is to encourage students to learn whatever they are interested in. Because interest are the most important thing to guide them to pursue further in their future career.
