16 Some people believe that in order to be effective, political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandon principle for the sake of compromise. Others believe that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives.
Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.
Both being open to mass opinoins and insistence to purticular principles are eccencial qualities to effective politic leaders. Although they seem ambivalent in the issue from the two diffent angels, really competent leaders can deal with the two factors very properly in actual circumstances.
Admittedly, listening to mass ideas is necessary for effective leaders based on two mainly reasons. First, politic leaders, natually, tend to feel complacement and proud as a result of occupying a higher position than others for a long time. All successful decisions and people's acceptance before help them consider themselves wise in judging current situations and making decisions for future. Then, if a leader is always ready to accept mass opinion, he can recognize such a negative emotion and even he can to be clear about some wrong knowledge of himself, timely correcting it. But on the opposite, for a headhard leader who is unpatient to mass, the result will be the snare of country development or end of the leader's politic career. Second, leader's acceptance of mass opinions will encourage people's enthusiastic of involvement in state policy and strongthen the country's cohesive force. Imagine, if in a government, leaders always listen to mass opinions automatically, and some suggestions can be heard and even accepted, how deep influence it will invoke. In this way, people around the world will be attend current affairs and have a stronger responsibilites of the country development.
However, it doesn't mean that political leaders must give up some principle to compromise with public opinions. Afterall, consistently committed to particular principles and objectives are also indispensible elements for effective leaders for the following reasons. For one thing, insistence to principles guarantees not only the policies' effecacy, but also people's trust and confidence. Take the example of Linkoln's decision on abolition of slavery. After publishing such a impressive decision, Lincoln was rejected strongly by most southen slaveholders and even got threats to personal safety. But he sticked to the original decision, and it was because of his persistence that draged America from backward economy, set the economic fundation of a world power and obtain trust of the current people as well as the admirament of the later generations. For another thing, in country emergencies, effective leaders should be firm, calm and assertive faced with mass hesitating ideas. In the situation of complication and press, people are inclined to be shaked and nonplussed with what to do. At such moment, leaders should judge the current situation calmly, make dicision and insist to it, but far from bogged in mass chaos. Thus, no matter to which goal, policies' effecacy, people's confidence, or solutions of difficulties, leaders must persist in some principles and objectives.
Based on what said above, an effective leader is one who listens to public opinions but never being obssessed in different voices. Further, he should adhere to his decision and principles based on the current situations. Actually, to a really excellent leader, listening to ideas and insistence are never contradictory.
