14. A survey of alumni of the class of 1960 at Aurora University yielded puzzling results. When asked to indicate their academic rank, half of the respondents reported that they were in the top quarter of the graduating class in 1960.

Which one of the following most helps account for the apparent contradiction above?

(A) A disproportionately large number of high-ranking alumni responded to the survey.

(B) Few, if any, respondents were mistaken about their class rank.

(C) Not all the alumni who were actually in the top quarter responded to the survey.

(D) Almost all of the alumni who graduated in 1960 responded to the survey.

(E) Academic rank at Aurora University was based on a number of considerations in addition to average grades.

如果调查10人,其中5个人说在 top quarter 。这有何奇怪。原文没说调查几个人是关键

这里需假设not all the studens in the 1960 class responded to the survey. If so, it's ok. If not, no correct answer.

结论才需要假设,这里只是描述了一个现象,不存在假设的问题。存在的现象有点奇怪,所以要求解释。只有选项A的存在才使得这个现象合理存在。

I think u do not understant what A said.

Among all of the statistic respondents, if half of them come from the top quarter of the graduating class in 1960, then the conclusion is reasonable.

以下是引用携隐在2004-10-15 14:02:00的发言:

u said it! Choice A is correct.

Give another choice F: the number of respondents occupy no more than 50% of total students in the class of 1960.

The additional choice will also be a possible explanation to the contradiction at issue... Understand now. thx.

When you come across the word " survey", you must be more than cautious. The intuition is that whether the survey is representative. In another words, if the people who were questioned can represent the class of 1960. The problem of the discrepancy right comes from this negligence. The original statement never indicates the surveyed people are evenly chosen from the class.

Spot the question type: Discrepancy.

1/2 of the " respondents "  said that they were the top 1/4 of the " graduating class "

How many are the respondents and how many are people in graduating class ?

A. Correct answer.
