The chiefreason why I appreciate the speaker’s opinion is that a great nation shouldmake the welfare of its people first. A truly great nation must have powerfulcomprehensive nation strength. Powerful comprehensive nation strength embodieson not only the achievement of rulers and minority elites, but also the entirewelfare level of people. So the nation can possess real centripetal force andcohesion. For example, nowadays, we often measure a nation’s economy by GDP. Although I agree with this recommendationto some extent, I still suspect this recommendation in two aspects. The firstof all, I question the standard of value about a great nation. A great nationshould beyond the basic function as a normal nation. Besides protecting all thepeople’s welfare, a great nation should have the ability to cultivate greatelites in science and art. The recommendation mistake the good nation of thegreat nation. Moreover, a great nation’s achievement often depends on theachievement of its elites. For instance, when we mention the Renaissance, weusually refer to the famous writers and artists. Their achievement can presentan intact picture for us to understand the whole Europe nations. Secondly, wecannot deny that the development of nation is often pushed by its rulers,artists, or scientists. For example, just because Watt improved the steamengine, the British Empire began a thorough industrial revolution. Anotherexample, without Hitler the whole German even the whole world may notexperience the catastrophe in World War II. Thirdly, before the modern nation andgovernment emerged, the relation between nation and people was not as equal asnow. In ancient, instead of seeking benefit for their people, a powerful nationmay reflect their strength by the rulers’ and artists’ achievement. In history,they all created glorious culture for people.

As for me, a great nation should beestimated in different value. It is the flourishing in overall fields, and thefertile oil for the elites based on ensuring all the people’s welfare that candefine a great nation.

All in all, which one, disagreement oragreement, will promote the surest indicator is quite an intricate matter whichdepends on so many factors. From a empire country style to modern democraticstate, a nation has paid more attention to normal persons. As to modernperspective, a real great nation should protect and develop person’s characteristicsand freedom as much as possible.
