Haowawa, thanks for your interest in Darden. Darden is a very different school in terms of case method, rigorness of its program and environment. Case Method and Learning Team Case Method is very different from Lecture Based Method. We have experience in lecture based teaching in primary school, high school and undergraduate in China. Case Method requires students to pre-study course material, understand, absorbe and master first. Learning team is a very important learning experience in Darden. Every night, student will meet with other 4 or 5 students from each section and discuss 3 cases together. It is your second time to review the case. If you have questions regarding questions given by the professor, it is good time to learn from others. if you know the answer while other students don't know, it is the time for you to teach other students. Then in the class, you should be prepared to answer questions in the case. Cold Call When class begin, professor will cold call a student to give an executive summary of this case. The " Lucky" student should help all classmates to walk through the case and need to decompose the case. So without deep understanding of the case, you cannot answer the cold call. Darden urges you to understand everything even before the class. In the class, every people should have his or her argument. S/He should be able to defend argument. It is a very simlar to business meeting. Rigorness of its program Darden is infamous for its rigorness of its program. I had to tell you the truth that Darden is very tough!You almost study all the time. Class finish @1:10pm each afternoon. You grab your food and then go to library and classroom to prepare the case for tomorrow. You need to read the case first then you expect to meet your learning team at night. you then spend another 3 hours in leaning team to study. Normally we finish our Learning team @10:30pm. Then you go home and prepare the case for the day after tomorrow or you can catch up if you don't fully understand even after learning team. Besides study, you have company briefing, 2 times a day in September, club activity, various forum, chat with second year, networking with alumni. So time managemnet skill is critical. People Most Darden people are very nice and helpful. People who applied Darden expect to be challenged. They are very smart people but not very aggresive. Darden graduate has a reputation as people who can "hit the ground and run" but a "bad"image as not very aggresive. I was amazed by the review session initiated by students in each section before our exam and all the notes were shared across the section. It was shared by all Darden students. I had a casual chat with another second year student talking about searching job. I just told her that I was interested in engineering company. She just told me that she had connection with Honeywell and Honeywell has good leadership program. She asked whether I need help to put me in contact with Honeywell. This happened all the time. Fit 1) Liked to be challenged. 2) Comfortable to speak in public, participate in learning team or class discussion, comfortable to defend his/her opinion 3)Nice, helpful and teamwork. 4) Not too aggresive! |
