72. Governments should not fund any scientific researchwhose consequences are unclear.Write a response in which you discuss yourviews on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. Indeveloping and supporting your position, you should consider the possibleconsequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequencesshape your position. With the development of society andtechnology, people are more informed and concerned about scientific research.Accordingly, the issue is heat discussed: whether government should fund scientificresearch whose consequences are unclear. The author asserts that it isunnecessary for the government to do so. I concede that it is right to someextant since the sources are limited where will be more useful if placessomewhere else, say, for the populace. However, no one knows the consequence ofresearch, investment in it might results in great harvest.Admittedly, funding scientific research withoutknowing the consequences might result in great losses of resources, which mightbe useful for solving other pressing issue confronted by the general public. Forinstance, for many years in the past, some researchers have been trying in anattempt to invent a perpetual motive machine, believing that they did notconsume energy and maintained moving. However, it turns out to be a vain trialat last. In this light, were these researches funded with a great sum of money, these resources might be wasted without payback. Moreover, since the financialand physical resource of a government is limited, these funds, if placed inresearch, will accordingly result in decrease investment in other fields which mightin more urgent need of fund from the government. If government uses these fundsto improve the medical care and teaching quality of the poor areas, to build adam to prevent people from suffering flooding as well as to decrease theviolence crimes, the society will be more harmonious. After all, the ultimategoal of the government is to improve the well being of the general public. In lightof this, not invest in research without clear consequence is wise. However, in the long run, providing fundscan really serve to promote the development of the society, and therefore thegovernment should do that. Since the main purpose of research is to explore theunknown for answers to our questions and for solutions to our enduringproblems. In light of this, the consequence of research is inevitable unclear. In other word, if the result of a research is clear, there is no need toexplore it anymore. Take the nuclear energy for example, before this energy wasbrought out, no one really knows what result of this research is and what itwill do to our society. With great sum of money funding this program, more achievementsare made, and every year it provides nuclear power to residents all over theworld and helps to alleviate the shortage of energy and reduce the pollutionmade by using fossil fuels such as carbon and petroleum. In this light, government should support these researches with unclear results with funds.
In retrospect, providing funds for thescientific research whose consequences are unclear is still necessary in thatit is the exploration of the unknown that promote the development of oursociety. However, this development should not be at the expense of the generalpublic. Only by reflecting about the balance between scientific research and thewelfare of the populace could a government being an effective one.
