MI: to trace the history of the development of liberalism

1. early liberal philosophers
first TH establish the idea of liberty
then JL, basically agree, and also extended: authority and jurisdiction function to assure that every citizen's liberal right is met. However, government's power should be limited - not interfere with liberal rights.
The early liberal philosophers includes the idea of the separation of the three power entities: execution, jurisdiction, and law-making. This idea is widely adopted by contemporary liberal philosophers, who also argue that state provision and service are needed to ensure equal rights - formal and literal guarantee alone is futile.
The early liberal philosophers also argue for separation of church and state. In fact, most of the early liberal philosophers do not have religious belief.


2. liberal philosophy 17c-19c
e.g. Adam Smith...
idea: every one acts for his own interests, ultimately promoting socioeconomic growth. Government should only act to protect liberal rights, not impose ... or interfere ... . Argue for liberal market.


3. late 19c, a big change: from negative liberalism to positive liberalism
figure: Green
dismiss the idea that humans are instinctively evil. highlight the development of morality.
Argues that liberty should provide a person the right to act, not only the protection form other peoples' action that deprive his liberal rights.
The idea of common good.


4. liberalism continued to thrive during 20c. At the beginning of 21c, a new idea emerged:
timeless liberalism: protect liberal right in the future


5. relationship between liberalism and democracy
liberalism protects minority interest. argues against the suppression of minority by the majority.
consensus: equality among humans
however, different liberal philosophers differ in the definition of equality.  (example given)


the idea is: argue not for social conformity, but for social harmony, which means to minimize the conflicts
this is consistent with the idea of pluralism: pluralism lead to ease of toleration
this is in agreement with Philosophical ideas of Kant and Mill.
