2.To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

The statement claims that the understanding of the most significant characteristics of a society should depend on the study of its major cities. But taking into account that there are many different characteristics of great importance in a society, such as art, literature and daily life culture, the status of major cities in those studies varies from historical period and specific aspects.

Consider the art and literature of a society in previous centuries, the major cities reflect the highest achievements. In retrospect of history, Renaissance, a famous and renovated period of human progress, reveals this view. During that period, one of the major cities is Florence, the center of the ideological trend of humanism. When studying Florence, researchers find that the majority of crucial works have something to do with this city in literature and art. As for literature, Florence is the hometown of Dante and Boccaccio, whose works occupy a large part of the highest achievements in literature of that society. Since the smell of their hometown had etched the heart of these two prominent writers, to study the works of them cannot ignore the influence of Florence. With respect to art, Da Vinci and Michelangelo have finished many great works in Florence, such as The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne drawn by Da Vinci and mausoleum sculpture of the Medici family, one of the most distinguished works of Michelangelo. Only if studying these works can we understand further towards the ideal of art, because these two artists represent the core of art in that society. Accordingly, the significant characteristics of art and literature in previous times are reflected in major cities.

Nevertheless, the art and literature of today cannot easily be learned in major cities. Since new technologies become the primary tools in the modern world, the prominence of art and literature have been overwhelmed, hence obscuring the affinity of major cities and those great works. Simply in a street surrounded by cars and skyscrapers, anything concerning art and literature could hardly reach the eyes of researchers. Therefore, to study the characteristics of art and literature nowadays, researchers should base their study on the books or art shows which could never be masked in a high-pace society due to its property for exhibition only. Consider the example of Harry Potter. It is true that no major cities have the exact connection of it, however, the work display the modern trend of novels and can never be neglected in the study of modern literature.

Turning to the study of daily life culture, eating habits and clothes has a different extent of connection to major cities. As for eating habits, the scope cannot be limited in some main cities, for the regional differences always indicate distinct eating habits. In China, people living in the south prefer to choose rice as food for almost every meal, whereas it is the noodles that dominate the table in the northern regions. So studying major cities could merely mirror the significant food differences of several regions instead a reflection of the whole country. Nonetheless, clothing reveals a different view that the major cities exhibit the latest traits in designing clothes. Expressing more of individual characters and non-mainstream, clothes are filled with diversity and changeableness in recent years. And these characteristics are predominantly showed in major cities, since the scene of a woman working in a coat of a weird latest style could be seen scarcely in a farm. Consequently, features of clothes embody in major cities of a society.

To sum up, whether we should study the major cities rests with the specific fields. When it comes to the art and literature, it is necessary to study major cities in previous times, whereas the importance of such study diminishes in contemporary society. When it comes to the daily life culture, the understanding of eating habits may be not well showed in major cities but the style of clothes.
