In traditional british system, it's half-way between the assistant professor and associate professor. In North America, it is normally held by those who are not on the tenure check and recruited purely for teaching. Actually they might be renowned scholars in the past, then took some positions in industry for a while, and back to academia to be an adjunct professor or a lecturer.
