Personally I think the following about an application's merits:
GPA: depends on your WE, the longer you worked the less GPA is meaningful (because it dates back farther), the school quality definitely plays a role here (a 3.5 GPA at Harvard isn't the same as a 3.5 at some random university that no one ever heard of)
GMAT: it's a standard benchmark, the higher is always better but once you're 700+ it doesn't help you anymore because first, everyone is above 700 and second the world knows Chinese/Indians are crazy at exams. If you proved the point that you can study, why prove it further?
WE: 3-5 years should be the best. (Again it matters because WE at JPM or BCG isn't the same as entry-level accountant)
Essay + Ref + interview: most important items in the package I believe, the only things that you can communicate by things other than numbers.
Let's be honest, everyone applying top school prolly have top numbers on paper, so in order to standout you need to focus on other things that can't be measured by a score. |
