以下是引用gigidinos在2007-2-14 14:23:00的发言:Chris & Tuck08China, Tuck is famous for its attention to each individual student. Also the faculties are dedicated to teaching. But everything has two sides. I heard that due to lack of research compared with other schools, the school's curriculum is more traditional, or less related with the current trends. How do you feel at Tuck in this regard? Hope you can share some experiences and thoughts. Thanks and happy holidays~~ As a Tuckie, I don't think our curriculum is outdated at all! Besides all the tranditional courses that every b-school offers such as corporate finance, accounting, marketing & strategy, the school created many unique classes that capture current "trends". For example, during the first year, we took a class called "Technology Strategy", which is not often seen in other schools. This course was created because technology has become extremely important for businesses (not just IT companies) to enhance (or even just maintain) their competitive advantage. We use a mix of new and old cases. I personally like old cases because some of the basic things you learn from these cases never change and time also serves as a proof to their correctiveness, not to mention these cases have been studies by so many people that you get more out of them. This semester I just took a class called "Managing Mergers and Acquisitions". M&A is a very hot topic, especially when the economy is good and everyone wants to expand its business. The prof. was one of the first ones that started research in this area (back in the days when M&A activities weren't as hot). We learned about the most recent research/theories/frameworks in class and analyzed many most recent (past 12 months) M&A deals. Who can say our curriculum is not "trendy"? Besides, tuck curriculum includes projects on consulting or business plans development for real clients. We use all the skills we learned here to apply to solve real world problems. BTW, Tuck is very team-oriented. All schools say it, but Tuck does it. I got my job because I showed superior teamwork and team leadership skills to other top b-school candidates in a group case study interview evaluated by the company managers, and to be honest with you, I am probably just about average in terms of these skills at Tuck. Why does Tuck place such a high emphasis on teamwork? Because teamwork is the "trend"! Because all companies want people with true team work and team leadership skills. It's not just luck that Tuckies are most welcomed by recruiting companies among top b-school students. And finally, I don't believe you need to go out of your way to chase all the trends in the market place. As long as you learn and really understand the basics, you will do great. Just read all WSJ & BW if you have enough time after the endless cases, group projects, homeworks, conferences (such as one called "Business Sustainability Initiative" that just ended last week) and the almost daily social activities. Hope this clarifies some of your concerns...I would also go back to the 1st article posted by Chris. It talks about Tuck's curriculum and how it links to the real world. |
