9) In any field of endeavor, it is impossible to make a significant contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
The statement claims that past achievements have so strong influence that there is no possibility to get significant contribution without them in any field of endeavor. It is to some extent reasonable since learning from past achievement can always be beneficial for knowing a seemly right way to study. It is true that there does exist a situation that some original ideas seemed coming up without influence of the past achievements. Therefore, it seems necessary to have a deep consideration about this issue.
In scientific field, Newton, who was a celebrated physicist, once said(and I paraphrase), "If I have seen farther than others, that is because I stand on the shoulder of a giant." The giant he refereed to is someone who had much knowledge in the field of physics accumulated by prior physicists. There are some particular cases to prove that. Based on the achievements of Copernicus, Galileo, a scientist who inducted experimental method into scientific researches, invented telescope, which made people learn that the earth is not the center of universe. Through many years, standing on Galileo's shoulder, Newton founded the law of Gravity, which enunciates the regularity of planets' motions.
When it comes to the philosophical field, there are also amount of examples to prove the strong influences of past achievement. For instance, DaoDeJing, a book left by a famous thinker in ancient China--Laozi, recorded what LaoZi said, revealing his insightful thoughts, even still have a great influence today. Taking Matsushita, who was the former of a famous international electrical equipment company as an example. He once talked about that he may not be able to get today's achievements without the influence of Laozi's achievements of that book.
Admittedly, there were some original ideas that seemed not affected by the past achievement. A lot products invented that never existed in the world can be s evidences. For example, the first airplane, which was invented byWright brothers, the inventing process seemed not affected by any past transport since there were no such a vehicle existed before, and there is no paradigm to learn to invent. The same can be said of the invention of the fist computer. Turning back to Mid-20th centry, one could easily recognize that there were no paradigm to study, in another word, there were no past achievement in that field.
However, were those original ideas to invent such excellent products really not affected by the past achievements? Taking a careful consideration, without past knowledge of mechanical, can Wright brothers finally invented an airplane? Without of past knowledge of electric field can the first computer being to the world? In actual, past achievement to some degree had a more or less effect on those creative ideas.
In conclusion, directly or indirectly, past achievements did have a strong influence on a certain field respectively since past achievements offered some knowledge that could be the base of the development of its main fields or other fields which is the element to make a significant contribution.
