题目:The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of marketing at Dura-Sock, Inc.
"A recent study of our customers suggests that our company is wasting the money it spends on its patented Endure manufacturing process, which ensures that our socks are strong enough to last for two years. We have always advertised our use of the Endure process, but the new study shows that despite our socks' durability, our average customer actually purchases new Dura-Socks every three months. Furthermore, our customers surveyed in our largest market, northeastern United States cities, say that they most value Dura-Socks' stylish appearance and availability in many colors. These findings suggest that we can increase our profits by discontinuing use of the Endure manufacturing process."
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

The vice president claims that company Dura-Sock should stop the Endure manufacturing process to save money and increase profits, because there is survey shows that people pays attention on the stylish appearance and the average customers purchase new socks every three months, which means people do not care whether the socks are endurable. Although the vice president's allegation seems reasonable at first glance, the evidence he provides is actually not sufficient enough to shore up his conclusion.

It seems reasonable when the vice president makes the suggestion that the company should abandon the endurance manufacturing process on the purpose of decreasing costs, because every company hold profits maximization as the basic principle. While, when the vice president reaching the conclusion that dropping in costs will lead increase in profits, he neglects an important fact that this conclusion is based on the assumption of changeless selling at the same time. Yet, Dura-Socks are long been famous for its endurance because of the advertisements, which emphasize the very character of endurance. Once this kind of socks is not endurable like before, people may feel that its quality has been reduced and do not trust this brand any more. We are all clear what will happen when brand losses people’s trust, the selling will definitely drop off, leading the consequence of decreasing profits instead of going up.

Admittedly, it is essential to realize what customers need and satisfy them, but the survey used as evidence to prove that customers are not interested in the character of endurance is based on the information of northeastern United States, which cannot cover the situations of the whole nation. Though the northeastern United States is the largest market of the country, is presumptuous to say that the company should change its manufacturing method just to meet requires of one market. Probably, the rest markets except the northeast United States have much more market shares in sum than that of northeastern United States. Thus, changing the manufacturing process is in a fact not suitable.

As to the claim that the average customers buy socks every three months, it is not qualified to serve as an evidence to decide whether the company should change its manufacturing process. Because a large part of the customers who purchase socks in supermarket are housewives and we all know housewives are easily affected by advertisements or sales promotion when buying things. Very possibly, it is the advertisements which emphasize on the endurance that make housewives purchase Dura-Socks. Under this circumstance, giving up the manufacturing process will be stupid measures which will cause the company’s major customers go away.

From all the discussions above, the evidence brought up is not convincing and conclusion made by the vice president is unwarranted without further investigation of the whole market.
