看了这么半天，我还是没明白。大家都在讲语法，可是人家原题在说，the red shift denotes the extent to which ...。如果像上面说的，extend to which这里是how much的意思，那么怎么能说 the red shift denotes how much??? 红移是一种现象，不是一种程度！

还是不明白，请高人指点。

虽然不是高人，但是试着回答一下

题目中 “red shift” denotes the extent.. 既然题目已经明指是 extent，我想就不需要再讨论是现象或是程度了。 至于实际上 red shift的确是有程度之别，不过我非本科生，怕给错误讯息，建议有兴趣可以去google上查一下。

the extent to which 是固定搭配，the extent that…是错误的。应该用to the extent that …

a)  to a certain extent / to some extent / to an extent ( = partly)

b)  to a great / large extent

c)  to a lesser / greater extent (less or more)

d)  to such an extent that / to the extent that ( = so much that )

简单理解此句为：
the term "red shift" denotes （how much ) light has been shifted by the rapid motion

但问题也来了，这里是否应该是how long? 这样好像说的更通一下呀！

呵呵，这是个光谱分析里面的问题, 可见光里面红光波长最长, 所以红外线肉眼是看不见的. 从这个角度上可以理解end of spectrum吧.

人家mm本来理解得蛮对，这一解释反倒糊涂了。

原句应该理解为在“red end”中间插入“or long-wave”。光谱有两端，一端为红（长波端），一端为紫（短波端），这里当然指的是红的那端red end罗，怎么能把red和end割裂开来理解呢。

        前面的extent, 在从句中做from a distant galaxy to
        的介词宾语；OG多次指出，当定语从句中的指示代词which担任从句中的介词的宾语时，介词需要前置于该which前，而toward the red, or long-wave, end of the light spectrum by the rapid motion of the galaxy away from the Earth.部分是shifted的状语；此处的toward与前面的to没有联系，也就不存在语义重复的问题

此处的中文意思是：在天文学中，术语“red shift” 表示这样的区域范围，就是通过该银河快速远离地球，从遥远的银河系到该区域范围的光被移动向红色或者说光谱末端的长波的区域范围。
