Grounding on the fact that some all-femalecolleges have increased their applications after admitting men, the presidentof Grove College recommended a similar policy implemented in this college aswell. However, the director of the alumnae association disagreed with thisrecommendation and pointed out several evidences. The reasoning involved bothin this argument and the president's recommendation seems plausible at firstglance; however, after scrutinizing, several logical fallacies underminingtheir validity could be found.


For the president, it is too hasty topredict a tremendous increase in applications and enrollment solely due toothers' policy and without distinguishing their tendency in the future. Thoseall-female colleges alternate their enrollment policy, yet their educationsystem might maintain unchanged. Thus it is possible that men students enrolledcannot receive education of quality and fitness, and eventually the collegeswould have to change the policy back to only female enrolled, or renovate thefacilities and system of the college at a great expense. Furthermore, proof waslacking that the similar policy would work in Grove College as well, whichmight differ totally from other all-female ones the president mentioned, interms of its geology and teaching modes. Therefore, it is not convincing tomake such prediction without providing sufficient evidence to demonstrate it.

For the director of the alumnae, it isunjustifiable to oppose to the president's recommendation only because of theannual survey of incoming students. To present the argument more persuasive,the director is supposed to conduct some surveys not only for the incomingstudents but also those who are willing to choose this college in the future,the students who are the actual factor influencing the enrollment andapplications of the college. It is possible that Grove College has its charm toattract both men and women students. If thereare merely 3 alumnae involved in this survey, it cannot actually represent thegenuine thoughts of most alumnae.
