TOPIC: It's impossible for aneffective political leader to tell the truth all the time. Complete honesty isnot a useful virtue for a politician. TIME:0:45:0
Someone has told me that a white lie is always better than a ruthless truth. I can't agree more with that. But when it comes to a politician leader, I believe it deserves further discussion.
Firstly, it's true that as an effective political leader, telling the truth all the time is almost impossible. It’s not his personality or character but the special position he resides in that should account for it. Obviously, as a political leader, he must consider the problems in a wider perspective, which means all the citizens should be taken into consideration. Therefore under some occasions, for the sake of all the people, sacrifice must be made about the profits of the minority, which is usually unacceptable by the poor ones. Thus, in order to ensure the realization of his policy and to remain the stable community, some white lies are essential. More than that, a politician is often in charge of the affairs with other nations, the competence between countries is obvious to see, and I'm pretty sure that as a politician, he must consider the benefit of his own country and mask some truth in the negotiations with other politicians, those of people whom we can't expect to think for the sake of our citizens. However, though accepting this notion, I can't agree with the conclusion of the issue, which goes "Complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician". I believe there is no one who is fond of a lie. We always want others to be honest and hence trustworthy. Of course an honest politician leader will be favored more widely than one who can't utter his true ideas. If a politician is not honest, people won't vote for him and his career life will be ended. It’s especially the case with the help of Internet and wireless communication nowadays, if a politician's scandal is covered, then the whole nation will find it the next day and, in no time, he has to resign for his fault. It's the same situation when it comes to the global affairs. I'm a hundred percent sure that not even one nation is willing to be an ally with a deceitful nation. Furthermore, a politician leader often represents his nation. He is just like a window through which other country's people can get familiar with this nation. Nobody would like to find the situation that his own country has been labeled "lie" all because of his untrustworthy behavior. What's more, an obvious problem shows up concerning with the reasoning procedure the topic holds. Here we must give a definition of "virtue". As far as I'm concerned, a virtue is "the principles and rules that are accepted by all and thus should be kept in people's minds to guide our behavior". Nevertheless, situations can't always get handled under the guide; there are often the cases when you are coerced by outer force. But can it be used as an evidence to prove principles to be wrong? Maybe you are late for a meeting because of a traffic jam, does it mean that you shouldn't keep on time? Maybe you have to disobey the law for a certain reason, does it mean that the law is useless and even wrong? I believe nobody will accept such a ridiculous reasoning. But this issue topic utters such one. For the reasons above, I can't disapprove more with the conclusion that honest is not a cherished virtue. All in all, principles should be held firmly even though occasionally they be disobeyed. We human beings have no excuse for deceit. |
