Q22:

City Official:  At LACE>LACETYPE>CityLACETYPE> LACETYPE>HospitalLACETYPE>LACE>, uninsured patients tend to have shorter stays and fewer procedures performed than do insured patients, even though insured patients, on average, have slightly less serious medical problems at the time of admission to the hospital than uninsured patients have.  Critics of the hospital have     concluded that the uninsured patients are mot receiving proper medical care.  However, this conclusion is almost certainly false.  Careful investigation has recently shown two things:  insured patients have much longer stays in the hospital than necessary, and they tend to have more procedures performed than are medically necessary.

In the city official’s argument, the two boldface portions play which of the following roles?

A.      The first states the conclusion of the city official’s argument; the second provides support for that conclusion.

B.       The first is used to support the conclusion of the city official’s argument; the second states that conclusion.

C.       The first was used to support the conclusion drawn by hospital critics; the second states the position that the city official’s argument opposes.

D.      The first was used to support the conclusion drawn by hospital critics; the second provides support for the conclusion of the city official’s argument.

E.       The first states the position that the city official’s argument opposes; the second states the conclusion of the city official’s argument.

* Is there any technique to do the "boldface" question?

不懂D要如何排除??

"D.      The first was used to support the conclusion drawn by hospital critics; the second provides support for the conclusion of the city official’s argument."

'the first'是critics的结论,并非去support结论的论据;同理the second也错。

hi there,

About Q3, I think the key to understand the question is to understand
the definition of 'assumption' in an argument. Assumption is 'an
unstated' evidence. Just as when you say 'I assume you speak Chinese?'
means you never told me if you can speak Chinese or not, but still
something about you makes me believe you can speak Chinese.

Hence, 'technological advances tend to be quickly surpassed' is not an assumption by its definition. It is an observation/consideration/evidence. This rules out choice A and C.

Hope this helps.

嗯。我觉得这个很好

to laihong:我觉得consideration就是理由或者解释的意思吧。不过我一直很想问有没有人选D啊。我做了两遍还是就想选D,因为第二句话和本题的结论不应该是against的意思吧,是进一步解释在"charge the greatest price the market will bear when they have such a product"后由于市场的反映进一步的举动,在"large profits on the mew product will give competitors a strong incentive to quickly match the new product’s capabilities"后只是价格根据供求平衡降到最佳的地方,就像最后一句形容的结果:Consequently, the strategy to maximize overall profit from a new product is to charge less than the greatest possible price.所以总之第二句话应该是进一步解释事情的发展而已,不能是call into question题目中的stradegy吧。

说得我自己都晕了~~各位大侠能不能指点一下

ETS sucks!

If you look up a dictionary, you will know that consideration means a fact that you think about when you are making a decision.

Therefore, if you substitute 'fact' for 'consideration' in GWD1-3, you will find B to be so correct.

By the way, does it mean that assumption can never be a correct answer in Boldface?

Q22:

City Official:  At laceType w:st="on">CitylaceType> laceType w:st="on">HospitallaceType>, uninsured patients tend to have shorter stays and fewer procedures performed than do insured patients, even though insured patients, on average, have slightly less serious medical problems at the time of admission to the hospital than uninsured patients have.  Critics of the hospital have  concluded that the uninsured patients are not receiving proper medical care.  However, this conclusion is almost certainly false.  Careful investigation has recently shown two things:  insured patients have much longer stays in the hospital than necessary, and they tend to have more procedures performed than are medically necessary.

In the city official’s argument, the two boldface portions play which of the following roles?

  1. The first states the conclusion of the city official’s argument; the second provides support for that conclusion.

  2. The first is used to support the conclusion of the city official’s argument; the second states that conclusion.

  3. The first was used to support the conclusion drawn by hospital critics; the second states the position that the city official’s argument opposes.

  4. The first was used to support the conclusion drawn by hospital critics; the second provides support for the conclusion of the city official’s argument.

  5. The first states the position that the city official’s argument opposes; the second states the conclusion of the city official’s argument.

(----单纯的中性事实数据)

Critics of the hospital have  concluded that the uninsured patients are not receiving proper medical care.---(Critics of the hospital have  concluded 根据以上数据单方作出结论----对应The first was used to support the conclusion drawn by hospital critics

However, this conclusion is almost certainly false. ( 反对意见的提出基于第三方的Careful investigation has recently shown two things:  insured patients have much longer stays in the hospital than necessary, and they tend to have more procedures performed than are medically necessary.-----此数据的表达与city official或Critics of the hospital 的相比带有明显倾向性----对应the second states the position that the city official’s argument opposes.)

所以我认为答案为--C
