Facing with similar courses necessary foryour major can be boring, while taking varied courses involving plentifulfields can also be a heavy burden. I incline to agree with the recommendation thespeaker referred only if some limitations are affixed in order to remove thecontrast between monotony of similar courses and burden of varied courses. University is not the certain place totrain professional talents for society; it aims to prove students’ all-roundquality. Taking courses outside the students is certainly not only forliberating them from monotonous courses necessary for their major, but for manyother significance meanings. Firstly, various disciplines are related, thestudy of courses outside a student’s field may benefit the study of his/hermajor. For example, philosophy is the foundation of all subjects. The approach itprovided to thinking can be applied to every problem. Secondly, a well-roundededucation gives you a wider view. An economist understand the problems amongagents more clearly according to the game theory, which is a great achievementof John Nash, whose academic field is mathematicians. Furthermore, awell-rounded education also benefits you in a tough job market. If you can proveyour ability in business but also have courses in literary, you may just win ajob over those who strictly majored in business. As I have argued in the first paragraph, takingvaried courses involving different fields is a heavy burden in some situation. Firstof all, to the students, especially those juniors and seniors, major coursescan be rather difficult, so that are required more time devoted to. Taking coursesoutside one’s major is not only taking large amount of time which should bespent in his/her major, but also distract the students from focusing on certainfields. As a result of these consequences, the student has neither a goodcommand of certain major nor an acquaintance of other fields. With one’slimited energy, this kind of distraction from major courses is clearly a burdenfor students. Secondly, with the heavy burden of study, students may prefer to bone up for the exam, even cheat in the exam. The badinfluence result from these extreme methods is in contrast with the purpose ofthe recommendation. Furthermore, disadvantages of heavy burden can be invisible, such as psychological problem. In conclusion, conducting the recommendation in improper way may result in the consequence, which is just the opposite with the expectation. Although the recommendation offered by thespeaker has its disadvantages, you can take monotonous courses and can also takevaried courses at the same time; it’s still not one or the other. Before thestudents’ major courses getting difficult, they can be required to take someelective courses. These courses can exactly fill their boring time and raisetheir all-round ability. When it comes to juniors or seniors, whether studentstake the courses outside the major is depend on their own energy, no requirementis added to. So that time for their major study can be assured. In summary, not only university shouldestablish a professional mechanism to make a reasonable course plan forstudents major in different fields, the students should choose proper time totake proper courses outside their major after a comprehensive self-assessment. |
