Environmentalist: The use of snowmobiles in the vast park north of Milville create sun acceptable levels of air pollution and should be banned.

Milville business spokesperson: Snowmobiling brings many out-of-towners to Milville in winter months, to the great financial benefit of many local residents. So, economics dictate that we put up with the pollution.

Environmentalist: I disagree: A great many cross-country skiers are now kept from visiting Milville by the noise and pollution that snowmobiles generate.

Environmentalist responds to the business spokesperson by doing which of the following?

GWD-2-10

Question 10:

Environmentalist: The use of snowmobiles in the vast park north of Milville creates unacceptable levels of air pollution and should be banned.

A.                         Challenging an assumption that certain desirable outcome can derive from only one set of circumstances

B.                                Challenging an assumption that certain desirable outcome is outweighed by negative aspects associated with producing that outcome

C.                         Maintaining that the benefit that the spokesperson desires could be achieved in greater degree by a different means

D.                 Claiming that the spokesperson is deliberately misrepresenting the environmentalist’s position in order to be better able to attack it

E.                        Denying that an effect that the spokesperson presents as having benefited a certain group of people actually benefited those people

WHY NOT B?

The business spokesperson says that snowmobiling brings many out-of-towners to Milville and the resulting economic benefits outweigh the pollution caused by snowmobiles.

The environmentalist counters by pointing out that many would be out-of-towners -- cross-country skiers -- are actually driven away by the noise and pollution of snowmobiling.

So, the environmentalist denies that the local residents are benefiting from the snowmobiling.  Therefore E is the best answer.

Why not B?  B says the environmentalist challenges the spokesperson's assumption that certain desirable outcome is outweighed by the negative aspects.  But the spokesperson actually says that the desirable outcome (economic benefit) outweighs (not is outweighed by) the negatives.  So, clearly B is incorrect.

environmentalist 的回答并没有针对the desirable outcome (economic benefit) and negative aspects (pollution) 两者 作比较 那个影响比较大

关键是B选项完全弄反了吧,环境学家的观点是certain desirable outcome is outweighed by the negative aspects,而不是在challenge

Comparatively, i think, C is better than E.

In E, the 'an effect' which ' having benefited a certain group of people' should prefer to  that by  'many out-of-towners to Milville in winter months', the benifits actually exist, rather than not exist. to deny its existence is not right.

Enviromentalist is challenging an assumption that certain desirable outcome (financial benifit to improve environment) is outweighed by negative aspects(people will not visit again because of the pollution)  associated with producing (keep using the machine) that outcome(financial benifit)

I did not feel anything wrong in B..... pls advise.....

b说的与文章的意思相悖,仔细读懂文章就明白到底是谁认为certain desirable outcome is outweighed by negative aspects associated with producing that outcome。

Challenging an assumption that certain desirable outcome is outweighed by negative aspects associated with producing that outcome.

Anyway,
