OG12 SC 125 疑惑中,请赐教!

不是第一遍看这题,刚刚,看了manhattan关于TWICE , double, twice as many, twice as much 的一些解释解释,感觉理解了,觉得要在context知道如何使用这些词才算搞懂了。 就顺便把相关信息放上来,以便后人使用。

In general :
if you say "twice as many", then this construction should be paired with a countable noun.
e.g., twice as many dogs --> "dogs" is a countable noun

if you said "twice as much", then this construction should be paired with an uncountable noun.
e.g., twice as much water --> "water" is an uncountable noun

if the noun in question is already an explicitly numerical quantity, then you should use neither "much" nor "many". instead, you should just use "twice" or "double" by itself.  // 这里就是BABYBEAR MM 前面说到的:“ "double"后面往往跟这一类的词:amount, quantity, speed, frequency, rate (of), rates (for), price, ...有规律吧?肯定不能跟"apples""students"这一类的具体的东东。”  

我的理解就是因为apple太多属性,尺寸,重量 etc, 所以使用double noun的时候需要明确其物理属性,否则就错了。。。

e.g., twice the increase --> "increase" is an explicitly numerical quantity

these rules are followed pretty closely.
so, for instance:
twice as much water --> correct, since "water" is an uncountable noun (but is not an explicitly numerical quantity)
twice the water... --> incorrect, since water is not a numerical quantity

twice as much as the increase... --> incorrect; redundant
twice the increase... --> correct

-"..., twice as many as ..." is an APPOSITIVE modifier. Appositives must modify some noun that comes immediately before the comma.  //prep有一题

NOTE:
If you have an appositive modifier as an ABSTRACT NOUN - such as "strategy", "figure", "statistic", "findings", "situation", "change", "difference" etc. - then such an appositive may be allowed to describe the entire situation described in the preceding clause.


Examples:
"... rose sharply in 1990, twice as many as ... " -- WRONG!!
"... rose sharply in 1990, doubling the increase of the previous year." -- RIGHT!!

指有很明确的数量,这时候就用倍数。如果数量含糊,用much 或many.

technology, the same amount of acreage produces
double the apples that it has in 1910.
(A) double the apples that it has
(B) twice as many apples as it did
(C) as much as twice the apples it has
(D) two times as many apples as there were
(E) a doubling of the apples that it did
答案是b
我的问题是那个did
曼哈顿说如果时态改变了就不能用助动词指代了,前面是produces现在时,为什么后面变为了过去式还能指代?

我还想补充一个问题,仍然是关于这句话的OG解释
他说double the apple这个短语会有两种理解:twice as many as或者as many as。
我有点不懂,不是有double么?为什么还会有as many as的理解呢?

靠语感选出正确答案,和把别人讲懂,是两回事。
我们练习的题目,全是retired questions,没有任何一道题会出现在真实考试当中。
练习的时候语感好,20s做对,谁有能保证考试那么紧张的情况下也能有那么好的预感?
或者,练习的时候,花20s时间排除了A/C/D/E,真正考试时,那些干扰选项不像这么长,换了个长相,又怎么办?

我觉得这里讨论的同学都很赞,他们中我相信有很多人选对了答案,但是大家相互探讨,追求的是怎么理解OG这句拗口的话,甚或遇到类似选项类似题目怎么办.....

我们现在花5分钟、10分钟、半小时甚至更长时间,彻底弄懂这个结构怎么回事,那么下次一看到这个题目,直接潜意识就知道该往哪个选项瞅:
doubling the quantity/number of sth (countable).
或者twice as many as sth (countable).
然后再扫一眼其它选项,就能选对了
整个过程within 10 sec

baby姐,我想请教一下, 像 double 这种 属于idioms吗?     我记得 RON 说 idioms 类型的, 一般GMAT不太着重去考察

新问题!!【关于TWICE的位置】已知正确选项B,错误选项C:
B. twice as many apples as it did
C. as much as twice the apples it has

C中使用”much"明显是错的,若将C改正为
as many as twice the apples it did
是对的吗?
现在C与正确答案B的区别就是twice 的位置不同。
