这里的each of the daughter cells没有问题

但是then后面的beginning 做什么成分呢？

这样就容易理解了

then是个adv，不能单独作连接2个句子的使用。似乎Marshial地解释还不够说服力。。。

这里用的是独立主格形式，好像以前有人问过。。

呵呵，三彩，很认真吗，确实是整个句子做独立主格结构，then在语法上的确如你所言，不过在实际中还是有的：

，你举的例子还是不能说服我，因为If是连词，所以才能用then，如果没有If, 那就不能用啦。。。。另一句是祈使句，作用同if---条件句，所以可以用then，否则还是不行的说。。。对吧。。。。

这个话题不提了，因为ETS不会考的。。。。。。。。所以我们还是花精力在真题上巴

"then" functions as adv. here.

"beginning a new life as a distinct organism" is -ing phrase describing the results of "cell division".
