* Required field for each test taken/to be taken. ^1 For PCLL, all applicants (including native English speakers) must take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test (the Academic module) and submit the band score obtained as soon as possible and in no case later than the second Friday of August each year, i.e. for a 2011 application, you must submit the IELTS test results by 12 August 2011.No further extension on IELTS submission will be allowed. A minimum standard of the IELTS test must be achieved as a requirement for admission to the PCLL. At present the prescribed minimum IELTS overall band score is 7. In addition, the Department of Professional Legal Education considers that the candidate's language ability as indicated in the Test Report Form is valid for only three years preceding the application deadline, i.e. for a 2011 application, the IELTS results cannot be earlier than 29 April 2008. This is a requirement of the Hong Kong Standing Committee on Legal Education and Training. No exemptions will be permitted. ^2 For TOEFL, the Faculty of Arts also requires a score of 4 or above in the Test of Written English (TWE) or a score of 25 or above in the Writing section of the internet-based TOEFL (with the exception of applicants seeking admission to the postgraduate programmes offered by the School of Chinese and the Master of Buddhist Studies programme). For IELTS, the Faculty of Arts requires, for all programmes with the exception of the Master of Buddhist Studies programme, a minimum overall band of 7 with no subtest lower than 5.5. ^3 Those who are applying for the programme of Master of Journalism is required to obtain a score of 550 or above (paper-based test) or 80 or above (Internet-based) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). IELTS should have a minimum overall band 6.5 with no subtest lower than 6. ^4 Those who are applying for the taught postgraduate programmes offered by the Faculty of Law is required to obtain a TOFEL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 593 or above (paper-based test) or 97 or above (internet-based test); or IELTS score of Band 7.0 with no subtest lower than 6.5. ^5 EdD Applicants who took the TOEFL should request the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send an official score report to the University direct. Original or certified copy of the Examinee's score record will not be accepted. ^6 For JD Programme, applicants who do not have a degree awarded by an institution with English as teaching medium shall be required to take either IELTS or TOEFL for admission to the programme. The TOEFL requirement is a score of 600 or above (Paper-based test) or 100 or above (Internet-based test). IELTS should have a minimum overall band of 7.5 with no subtest lower 6.5 and a minimum band score of 7.0 in the academic writing module. These results must be obtained no more than two years prior to the expected date of entry to the JD programme (for instance: if an applicant is submitting his or her application for entry in September 2011, his or her English test scores must have been obtained no earlier than September 1, 2009). ^7 For admission to Master of Economics/Master of Finance, a score of 577 or above (paper-based test), 233 (computer-based test), or 90 (internet-based test) in TOEFL, or a minimum overall band of 7 with no subtest lower than 6.5 in IELTS is required.
Applicants who are not subject to this English language requirement are strongly encouraged to provide their results in the English subject in their most recent public examination (such as HKALE, GCE (A Levels), SAT 1 (Verbal), TOEFL or IELTS etc) for our reference. Applicants who feel that their grade does not accurately reflect their standard of English may consider taking TOEFL / IELTS to prove their English proficiency. |
