我认为从逻辑上来考虑这个after death没有问题啊??!!!

前面他说了living ,那不就是before death 吗?!!!

Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status .

我认为its 不是指代的composer,你们看,那些在生前很受欢迎的作家死后名声就下降拉,而且这个名声也没有回到他以前那种形式的地位.

所以我觉得应该是指代的reputation.

我已经比较清楚,谢谢各位的讨论。可是请问,在whose前面的but在这里出现是作为一个连词对吗? 作用和and是一样的。只是意义不同,对不对?

yes, "but" is for contrast.

以下是引用jefferyli在2004-7-28 21:18:00的发言:

246. Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again.
(A) often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again
(B) whose reputation declines after death and never regains its status again
(C) but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status
(D) who declines in reputation after death and who never regained popularity again
(E) then has declined in reputation after death and never regained popularity

Key: C, agree. The question here is the highlighted after death, gramatically it should refer to reputation in first priority, rather than to composer, therefore causing confusing, am I right?

答案C没有问题,但是OG11对d的解释是:The verb tenses are inconsistent with present tense used in the first phrase; redundant again. ,问题是如果将d该为:who declines in reputation after death and who never regains popularity. 是不是就行了呢?三个who非常罗嗦,而且前两个who之间有逗号,但第二格和第三个之间却用and连接,非常怪异啊。

个人觉得D去掉again改动后,最好前面还是有一个but,因为意思转折了:but (who) declines in reputation after death and (who) never regains popularity.

同时who因为重复也去掉:也就是but declines in repuration after death and never regains popularity. 这样就正确了。

请问,两个连续的定语从句,其先行词就一定一样么?(个人觉得答案为no)

即,用了who再用whose,不用担心两者指代不一样么?

或者要根据语义来判断的?

多谢!

its当然指代reputation

我想问:regains its former status 不redundant么?

regain 还要former干什么?

regain 和former起的作用是不一样的。如果用regain---again,这里的again是修饰regain,造成了意思重复,但是former是修饰status的,两个有不同的作用,之前也有过类似的情况,好像在大全上,等找到了把例子再贴上来
