Yes the goal is practical, but—a bit confusing.  That is, if you have NO background in luxury goods, how do you KNOW you wanna do it when you grow up?  What if you try it and you don’t like it?  Or worse yet, what if you get to school and try to get that job and cant, since you don’t have the background?  Then you are unemployed, and the school looks foolish.  The school looks bad.  The MOST important rule in MBA apps is to link your past experiences to your future goals.  how will you PROVE to the adcom that you will get a job in luxury goods, and LIKE it, if you don’t have any experience in the field?

Actually some programs strong at Luxury Business management in Italy and France express clearly that luxury background is not necessary for applicants, but it goes without saying that experience is particularly crucial in this industry. Therefore, their point is that they will provide you with a lot of relevant internship and skills to make you competent to find a job after graduation. However I suppose that one must consider motivation and potential achievement from the program and that relationship between past exeriences and future goals.

I have a marketing background in IT industry and also did some work on design and human-machine interaction. I find that luxury industry is really promising, especially in this country and that luxury business job marketing is far from saturation, so I sought for a shift to do marketing work in luxury industry. Therefore, I applied a MBA program specialized in luxury and want to work in Europe for a couple of years before retunring to China to develop. Is this explanation reasonable?

Hey there!  Yes it is reasonable, but I still find it to be somewhat weak.  If I were accepting applications, I would want SOME kind of proof that you are committed to the luxury goods business.  Not necessarily actual work experience (as the schools have indicated) although that would of course be preferable.  You will STILL need to prove to us that you are committed to it.  Are you?  How can you prove that you love the stuff?  How can you prove to us that you will GET that internship?  This is what you will need to convey in your essays…

It is so kind of you to give the valuable reply.

In fact, the motivation of or the reason why I want to devote to luxury goods business is none of any emotional concerns, but is absolute judgement in commercial facet. I have been in a custormer product marketing position for six years and have somwhat acute marketing sense. I suppose, in the next ten years in China, there is not only tremendous oppotunities for global leading luxury brands because of the chaos situation with mismatches between brands essence and customer cognition therein, but also big bang of establishing and forstering Chinese indigenous luxury brands. There must be some top professionals in luxury industry appearing in China, as was the case of IT industry. It is the potential power and lack of relevant professionals with global horizon that attract me to devote my later career time to this industry, which I suppose far more promising than IT industry. The gaps between my goal and present competence are global branding experience and a ticket to luxury industry, both of which are trumps of some MBA programs in Italy and France.

This is the very thought of me. Is it somewhat stronger than what I have stated before?

Moreover, I am applying for some top European MBA programs specialized on luxury industry and I crave for high scharloship. Would you be so kind to give me some further suggetion to strengthen my competetive forces, especially in the essays relevant to luxury industry and interviews, part of which is held by HR of an authentic luxury company. I got a decent profile with GMAT 760, high IELTS score, engineering bachelor in THU and 6 years working experience in a Chinese F500 IT company and I have also driven an SVP(CTO) and a VP to write reference letters for me, both of whom know me very very well.

这位同学,你表达的passion看出来你一点也不了解奢侈品这个行业。这个行业找人看背景的,不是只有passion就OK了。它和娱乐也一样,不看MBA,看你的行业背景和人脉!Good luck!
