Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Should a leader be quickly and easily influenced by the shifts of popular opinion? My answer to this issue is no. A true leader should not change his/her policy frequently in order to compromise the people.
To begin with, the frequent changes in a leader's policy compromise his/her prestige and reputation. The change in a leader's policy implies the original one had certain flaws, which caused people's discontent; thus, the leaders have to change his original decision to meet the people's opinion. If a leader modifies his decisions too often, the public may think that the leader's decisions are too cursory to reach success and pursue the well-beings of the public. As a result, the reputation of this leader may deteriorate; and possibly, this flaw may be seriously criticized by his/her opponents in politics. In this case, the leader should prevent changing his policies or decisions easily and quickly.
Moreover, since people's points of view may be limited to their own interest, the leader should not compromise to the public sometimes. There is a saying goes that everyone has an angel; people are more likely to focus on their current and short-range interests rather than to emphasize on some long-range benefits of the country--which a true and great leader should pay more attention to. Despite the dissent from the farmers in the south, Lincoln, one of the most outstanding presidents in American history, insisted putting an end to the slavery, which was considered to contradict the human rights and democracy of a great nation. We can imagine that, if Lincoln had compromised to the farmer's opinion and changed his determination, America might be not so advanced as today. A true leader should insist in what he think is consistent with the long-range benefits of a nation and ignore people's opinions which presents interests of a small group of people.
As far as I am concerned, true leaders who accomplish much are marked by the ability to make a correct decision by his/her own judgment. When it comes to some important decisions or policies which may determine the nation's next developing direction, the public may find it too difficult to figure out a well-rounded and correct solution. China’s situation in the late 1980s is a case in point. At that time, China was suffering serious difficulties on its way to prosperity and a highly effective policy should be found for the nation's further development. While the most people have no ideas how to pave the way for a bright future, Deng Xiaoping figured out a essential policy, Reform and Open-up, which was proved a superior method for China to develop. In sum, there are difficult issues with no public's opinions influencing the leader; the leaders should make decisions according to their own knowledge. If the decision works effectively, people will admire the leader very much and consider him/her true brilliant leaders.
To sum up, a true leader should not easily and frequently change his/her decisions due to the shifts of public views. Because too frequent sifts in leader's policies may damage the leader's prestige and reputation. Furthermore, the leader should focus more on the long-range benefits of a country and make outstanding decisions. 提纲 1、善变影响声望 2、公众观点不可轻信 3、真正的领导人体香在 有能力自己做决定 |
