The Optional Essay is intended to provide the Admissions Committee with insight into your extenuating circumstances only. Please limit your response to two pages.

Yes my friend, you are correct.  You should ONLY use the optional essay to cover extenuating circumstances.  After all, you need to follow directions in your application, and it sounds to me like the instructions for Duke ESPECIALLY are very clear.  “Extenuating circumstances only.”  Very clear my friend.  Follow directions, perhaps the most important thing you do in your essays…
