You want to ask the person who knows you the best—don’t worry about who is more senior. So if for example the person is only one “level” above you, but they know your work the best, THAT is the person to ask to write your rec. the better they know you, the more personal (and good) your essays will be. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi, Jon
My understanding on the supervisor is the direct report. Most of the B-school are asking for one recommend letter from your supervisor. My question is if there is some reason that I am not able to get a recommend letter from my direct report but someone else in the company who also knows me well enough to write a letter, will it jeopardize my application. Will the school ask me the question why I do not have a recommend letter from my direct report? thanks in advance

Hey there—yes, it is ideal if you can get your direct supervisor. That is for sure—but at the same time, that is not always possible. And schools know that! They realize that it might put your job in danger. So what do you do? Write a quick optional essay. Or some apps will have a special place (in the short answer sections) to explain why you haven’t used your direct supervisor. But it is okay! When I applied (and I got into HBS, Stanford etc.) I didn’t have a direct supervisor LOR either. And it worked out juuust fine. J So don’t stress, and just explain the situation. Schools will get it

Supervisor = direct report. If you aren't choosing him, you need a good reason. After all, if the company trusts this guy to report about you and evaluate you, then you'd better be able to explain why you don't trust him to do the same.
Another option might be to do both. Supervisor and mentor. After all, schools allow you to have more than one LOR.
