不过如果是核心词是rain的话，其实后面的 that lasted for almost three hours应该是非限定的更好

如果句子是because of rain that lasted for almost three hours，I stayed home for the whole night,那么就错了
要搞清楚原因是雨，还是持续时间。
不恰当的比方就是 这个原因有足够的资格引起你的结果么

是的是的，我刚才讲的时候疏忽了这点~

后面没有对应介词错误的原因只有一个：有歧义。（所以也不是所有都补出介词）
而这里burning和drawing都是动名词，很容易让人识别出平行，而且不会产生歧义，所以就不需要补出介词的。

1. 不需要by，drawing和burning的平行，by是独立其外的哦。
2. instead of是介词短语，而且它有一个特点就是后面只能加名词短语（包括动名词），不能和有些介词一样可以加介词短语如until after, from behind, except in...所以D里面除了改正for generating还必须去掉by。其实Instead of可以跟这么一串，instead of后面不能跟很长一串只要是因为很多时候instead of后面的核心词错误，而这里是burning calories，是正确的。

动名词的对称是一种偏好，因为动名词有动作含义在里面，相当于动作的平行。

嘿嘿，谢谢版主大人，但是 什么时候把by 看作 独立其外呢？那我记得我做过的题目中 rather than 后面没接和前面对应的介词是错的。。难道我记错了？请斑斑再指导，另外，insead of 后面的核心词错误是怎么讲呢？有什么例句具体解释下吗？麻烦您了~

this parallelism is acceptable, but there are two undesirable things:
* "hunters OF large animals" isn't truly parallel to "meat scavengers"

this is better parallelism (notice that "as" is excluded from the first part this time).

这题我也错选了D.不过楼里的几个说法不太全面，下面贴上RON大神的官方讲解。
对于D选项为什么不对的解释：

that idiom is wrong there
there's also the issue of "instead of...", which should be followed by a noun.
(this is not a special construction; it's the same thing you need behind "of" in general.)
意思就是instead of后面应该加名词或者名词形式的短语，比如v-ing.这里用by doing这个介词短语是不正确的。

另附上instead of 和 rather than的区别，不过RON说这个点gmat考到的可能性不太大。
... "X instead of Y" means that "Y" was some sort of default / assumed / preferred outcome, but that X has been substituted for it.
... "X rather than Y" indicates no such preference; it just means that there were options X and Y, and, this time, X won.

e.g.
He paid with a check rather than cash.
--> He had two options, and chose the check.

He paid with a check instead of cash.
--> He was supposed to pay in cash, but he paid with a check.

again, the likelihood that this will ever actually be tested is pretty much nil, but, there it is.
