Yes, of course the school cant say that they will give any extra consideration if you go—after all, for so many applicants who simply cannot make the trip, it would be unfair to do so. But it is just common sense here; if they can put a face to your name, and if you can meet someone important (and assuming that your application is right on the edge etc.) then it can have a great effect. It is just one more valuable datapoint—and the more in-depth, first-hand data they can give, the better! Hope this helps, and good luck to you my friend
