For every milepost sign, there are two faces. On one face is the distance from the start. On the other, the distance from the end. The first sign has 21-23 on it. She thought 21 (facing her) is the distance from the start and 23 is the distance from the end. So she expected to see the next sign as 22-22. But instead, she saw a sign 20-24. That means, the number facing her indicate miles to the end of the path, not miles from the beginning.
