题目:10. The following appeared in theeditorial section of a local newspaper.
“This past winter,200 students from Waymarsh State College traveled to the state capitol buildingto protest against proposed cuts in funding for various state college programs. The other 12,000 Waymarsh students evidently weren’t so concerned about theireducation: they either stayed on campus or left for winter break. Since thegroup who did not protest is far more numerous, it is more representative ofthe state’s college students than are the protesters. Therefore the statelegislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students.”

正文:
Theauthor in this report concludes that the state legislature need not heed theappeals of the protesting students. In support of this conclusion, the authorcites fact that since only 200 out of 12000 college students traveled to the statecapitol building to protest against proposed cuts in funding forvarious state college programs, the majority of students weren’t concern abouttheir education. However, this argument has two fallacies.

Firstly, the reasoning that students thosewho did not traveled to the state capitol building to protest are not concernabout their education is incorrect. There is no indication that the only way toprotest is to travel to the state capital building and protest. However, therecould be other approaches to protest such as put a video about the bad effectof cutting funding for college programs on youtube, or go to other states toform a student union to make the power of protest bigger. So the author’conclusion about students who did not traveled to the state capitol building toprotest are not concern about their study is fallacious.
What’s more, the author assumes that sinceonly minority of students traveled to the state capitol building to againstproposed cuts in funding for various state college programs, the legislatureneed not heed the appeals of the protesting students. However, this assumptionis unwarranted. The legislature makes decision not just for those who aremajorities or powerful, but for everyone who live in this society. Furthermore, the legislature should especially pay attention to those who are minoritiessince they are disadvantaged. If the legislature ignores the appeal ofminorities conventionally, it will lose its credibility. In conclusion, because the author drawsconclusion from an incorrect reasoning line and mistakenly assumes thatlegislature should not heed the appeals of the minorities, this argument isweak. The author could strengthen the argument by eliminating other ways ofprotest and provide sound evidence for why the legislature should ignore theappeals.
