B. Nearly 99 percent of five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth have vanished.

E. Of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent have vanished.

I choose E.  Here “five hundred million different species” is a definite noun phrase, so article “the” must be used in front of it.  Therefore B is out.  In addition, “appeared” in B implies that all the species are all gone now, which is not true.  So E is a better choice.

The ninetheenth-century chemist Humphry Davypresented the results of his early expreiments in his "Essay on Heat andLight", a critique of all chemistry since Robert Boyle as well as avision of a new chemistry that Davy hoped to found.

A. a critique of all chemistry since Robert Boyleas well as a vision of a
B. a critique of all chemistry following Robert Boyle and also hisenvisioning of a
C. a critique of all chemistry after Robert Boyle and envisioning as wess
D. critiquing all chemistry from Rober Boyle forward and also a vision of
E. critiquing all the chemistry done since Robert Boyle as well as his ownenvisioning of

A is correct.  E is out because it sounds like H.D. was also critiquing “his own envisioing”.  Similarly, D is out because it sounds like HD was also critiquing “a vision of ...” (his own vision).  A is correct because “a critique” and “a vision” is perfectly parallel.  In B, “a critique” and “his envisioining”, and in C, “a critique” and “envisioning” are not parallel.

在LONGMAN Dictionary of Contemporary English里,

commodity:

1.a product that is bought and sold

2.a useful quality or thing
