I choose E.  Here “five hundred million different species” is a definite noun phrase, so article “the” must be used in front of it.  Therefore B is out.  In addition, “appeared” in B implies that all the species are all gone now, which is not true.  So E is a better choice.

 这道题Ｇｉｇｉ女侠说ｍｅｔａｌ不是commodity。这么讲不好。小弟不才，蹭过MBA的宏观经济课和国际市场的课。商学的定义是，只要可以大量进行transaction,熟语非耐用品，具备fast moving consumer goods特点的商品都可以称作commodity。　课上一个ＮＹＵ的教授举例子的时候，甚至举到了钻石作为commodity的一种，因为de beer把其产业化，而且消费者也经常换首饰和报废首饰。这样的话，Ｄ应该是很好的选项。　Ｄ的ｒｅｍａｉｎ有没有ｓ阿，如果有的话，Ｄ比Ｃ好的

其实金属期货交易里，commodities指均质金属的,选项C在这点上是没有问题的。

在LONGMAN Dictionary of Contemporary English里，

commodity:

1.a product that is bought and sold

2.a useful quality or thing

也许在国内的字典里忽略了1这样的解释，直接变成了“日用品”。
