Hey there!  Just a couple quick notes for you, as you keep preparing your apps.  First of all, I know that it may seem scary to you—but ten apps…isn’t really that many.  Let me explain.  Your third app will go much more quickly than your second.  Your fourth will go more quickly than your third.  Your fifth will go more quickly than your fourth…and so on.  J  Your apps will go faster and faster as you go.  So don’t be afraid of taking on a lot of em—your first app will take the longest by far.  And your last app will surely be your best.  Don’t be afraid of applying to lots of schools.

That would be our advice to you my friend.  Apply to all 8 schools—if you had to skip one, skip Stanford.  It is the least likely of the bunch—and you will be in great shape at any of the others.  Hope this helps…and good luck!

Hi Jon,

Thanks so much for the reply! Those comments are definitely helpful to my application. I am preparing my essays and recommendation letters now to aim for the 2nd round. Hopefully things will go smoother as you said and I can finish all 8 schools in the list. =)

I'm struggling with my recommendation letter now. If you could provide an advice, it would be wonderful. The question is, do I HAVE TO get a letter from my current manager? Sound like leaving will make me weak in job security and growth. After all, I cannot guarantee a good offer from a top school now. Can I use 2 letters from my previous managers instead? How did you handle this? Does this matter a lot?

Also, applying 8 schools will create a big work load for my recommenders, won't it? Many schools have different questions for the recommendation letter. I doubt my managers will be able to answer all of them in detail if they write 8 versions. Should I provide them with an outline for each letter?

Please let me know. Thank you again!!!

Hey there.  SO great to hear back from you, we love to get to know people as you can tell!  The answer to your first question is easier—no, you do not need a LOR from your current supervisor.  Ideally you would have one, and if you don’t you could perhaps address it quickly (two sentences) in your optional essay.   But it isn’t a deal breaker if you don’t have one.  Schools recognize that your leaving work might be problematic.

And yes, applying to many schools could create extra work for your recommenders. But if they want to support your career, they would be up for the challenge. J  You can provide info to them of course, but you don’t want to micromanage these guys.  A huge part of their value will be to allow them some room to say something that you may NOT have said already in your app.  Let them surprise you—we call it the 70-30 rule.  70% of what they write should be right in line with what you cover in your apps.  And 30% should be NEW material.  So set them free to create that material…Good luck!
