顺着炒汇的思路再说一说social science尤其是business和management

我没有炒汇那么好的文采，而且他的贴是从一个很general的角度阐述social science，我只想说说有关business和management.

首先说说social science, social science is based on society. The next question is, what constitutes a society? 炒汇的focus是human being constitute a society. 这自然是不错，但是按照目前capital structure theory的流行语来说，属于structural approach. 如果未来neuroscience research能达到从structural approach剖析人类的表现，自然这个是最好的approach.但是目前科学没达到这个高度，那么business和management只能用reduced form approach来研究问题，什么是reduced form呢？ Institution-based approach. 毫无疑问，institution是随着人类社会不断进化而endogeneously 形成的， 而也正是这很多的institution构成了society的基石，这其中最重要的就是legal institution，譬如说SEC和FASB

因此，就目前reduced-form approach占主流来看， 想成为一个好的business和management researcher必须要有好的institutional knowledge，这也是我对Bernanke关于至少就accounting和finance而言近些年来的job market star都是科班出身的一个解释。Institutional knowledge看不见摸不着，需要长时间的积累，而且很多时候不仅仅是书本的积累，当然科班出身没吃过猪肉也看过猪走还是要好很多。好比如说你MBA学的corporate finance和你去real life做capital budgeting有很大的出入，再比如你在classroom学的accounting standard和你真正去auditing firm apply这些standard也是差别很大，而这些是学science和engineering的人所不具备的。 我不否认有一些学science和engineering的奇才可以在短期内迅速grasp institutional knowledge，但是对大多数人而言这是个长期的过程。所以大部分学数理的转到finance也只能去做asset pricing尤其是fixed income和derivative,为什么？ 因为这些对于institutional knowledge的要求应该是finance里相对来说最小的。所以上世纪末本世纪初出了不少这方面的job market star. 但是基于目前的technological constraint, 能做的已经越来越少，所以近几年少有做fixed income成为market star的，无论什么出身，即便是Duffie的学生。  为什么做corporate finance的model很多时候比做econ的model要更challenging? 因为economics里相对不需要考虑太多的institutional rationalization，但是corporate 需要。 这也就是做corporate finance做得好的中国人都是科班出身的，因为institutional knowledge matters. 很多数理出身的人可能前一两年上课上得很轻松，但是一到真正想idea的时候反而不如科班出身的人想得快想得好，答案还是institutional knowledge的缺陷。

当年Lucas去读Chicago econ PhD据说开始的course几乎都是C,为什么？因为Lucas本科学的社会学没有什么数学基础。不过数学这种东西是偏theoretical不需要任何institutional knowledge的积累，只要足够smart很快就能补上，所以Lucas读PhD的时候自己补上很快就成了famous economist，而很多比Lucas technical更好的人没有他这么大的contributiom. 所以其实最难补的是institutional knowledge，因为这些决定一个人看问题和想问题的角度，决定big picture，决定 economic insight, technical的东西都是second order effect.

我觉得欧洲的PHD更注重对institutional knowledge的培养，而美国都走的technical路线，因为好多美国博导都是technical出生。

美国学者太偏empirical了，欧洲学派有太偏qualitative，两派如果能互补一下，再回到所有science的最最基础点 quantum physics，可能会有很大突破。

另外，不同意楼主的一个观点，决定big picture的是一个人的social construction -- implicit theories (schema-like structure)，这是决定人怎么看待事物的最最根本的source

Relatively speaking, yes. A lot of European schools prefer hiring asset pricing persons than corporate, especially in France, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

请楼主稍微解释一下。

对于欧洲和美国的区别我说一下自己的体会：
Mary Jo Hatch的Organization theory, modern, symbolic and postmodern perspectives第一版的序里面她描写了一下她自己对于欧洲和美国的差异： 欧洲更在意ontology and epistemology，而美国可能应该是更偏technique and methods （如果我没有记错的话）。
当然我的领域只在economic sociology and org. theory，对于finance毫无发言权。

没错，你说得很对。美国学派经常挂在嘴边的是operationalization和怎样才能构建好的 严谨的construct，deductive reasoning是基础，却严重忽略了inductive的方法。strategy和OB近20年来在AMJ, AMR上都有一些inductive的精彩文章，但始终被压制着，毕竟不是主流。Stanford的Kathleen Eisenhardt，UNL的Mary Uhl-bien，Clemson的Russ Marion在inductive方面目前算是权威了。


对于ontology, epistemology，欧洲学派在理解上非常透彻，虽然内部也有争执。美国的主流学派是很忽视这些方法的，说到底在于how have you been trained，如果你根本没接受过这方面的训练，你很难看懂欧洲学派写出来的文章。两派差异性的根本原因在于美国学派的思想发展来源于psychology, applied mathematics和physics，欧洲学派的思想发展来源于philosophy, sociology, biology。看问题的角度和广度都不一样。


但商科里的各个领域，接受这种“新思想”的过程是比较缓慢和痛苦的。以management领域为例，美国学派第一次非常认真地关注ontology和epistemology的问题，是在1982年，Hunt和Burns第一次在学术界发起了讨论，结果是啥都没讨论出来，教授们根本没接受过这种新方法的训练，有一种自然的抵触。2000年的AoM年会上，Gary Yukl站出来再一次呼吁学术界要重视欧派的研究方法，传统的deductive方法在解释目前社会的很多问题上有些不适，management的起源physics, mathematics, psychology这些学科都在50-80年代发生了重大的思想变革，而management本身却基本没怎么变，思路还是很老套。2001年911事件中，army, navy, air force, marines, national guard之间的混乱协调直接导致军方全面评估自身对leadership和TMT的认识，开始寻找学术界的合作来重新审视我们对management的一些看法。hunt和eisenhardt在这个时期起了关键的推动作用，逐步开始引入ontology和epistemology的讨论。Uhl-Bien和Marion也开始逐步深入研究complexity leadership，研究quantum physics的新思想在管理方面的应用。另外，从2003年开始，西点军校应军方高层要求，每年都会派两名优秀学员去欧洲学习ontology和epistemology的方法，应用这样的方法来重新审视军方对于strategy和OB思想的理解及应用。

I am not familiar with OB so I cannot comment on that.

As for examples of institutional knowledge, here are two:

1. Research on financial analysts: institutional knowledge include the knowledge of how analysts are hired, evaluated and promoted; how they (in real life) make their earnings forecasts and/or stock recommendations, etc.

2.  Research on banking, institutional knowledge include the definition of different types of banks, how banks are regulated,  how those regulatory ratios are calculated,  how managers in the banking system are manipulating their balance sheet to satisfy regulatory needs, etc.

At least for finance, Europeans (especially Continental Europe) focus less on corporate than Americans. But for OB,  it might be a different story.
