请问             牛人一般推     v.s.     一般老师强推           哪个更有用？

最强的当然是大牛说这学生科研很强，现在讨论下一个档次的：比如

大牛说学生甲上过我的课，积极提问，表现很好，或是得了A+。提的问题让我看出他有科研潜力。

圈内一般prof或是年轻prof说学生乙和我做过科研，科研能力很强，有n篇working papers和m篇working projects，是serious的科研不是term paper那种学生随便写的

这个没有泛泛的回答，看具体的情况了。


如果大牛只是说你上过他的课，表现不错，仅此而已，作用很有限。如果一个AP非常细致地在推荐信里描述你的能力和潜力，积极推荐你，或许更有用。

你这“非正式的”牛推才是真正的牛推啊！

很坦然地说，我拿过非正式的牛推，就是大牛不写推荐信，直接打电话或者当面推荐。

什么才叫牛推？就是当有N多人的硬性条件比你高的时候，一封这样的推荐信可以让教授们忽视所有的硬性条件。当然，前提是你要真的肚子里有货，要不top牛人凭什么动用自己的人脉强烈推荐你。仅仅是上过某牛的课是远远不足的。。。。

You need to think why schools ask for reference letter?

There is always information asymmetry in the student recruiting process, your GPA, undergraduate and graduate school, research experience can somehow reduce this information asymmetry, but this information is not always credible. As a result, they want to have someone who they know give them some information about the students. If a big guy says the student is good, the information asymmetry is almost 0. But if a junior prof says the student is a genius, do you believe that?

那倒也不一定啊，听说Samuelson给每个学生的推荐信都说这是他最好的学生。其他学校上一两次当以后就学乖了，嘿嘿。

第二个一看就知道是胡扯。哪怕是job market candidate甚至AP，拿出三篇以上serious的working paper都不容易。如果prof连这点鉴别能力都没有,或者明知不行还瞎吹，其可信度可想而知。
第一个靠谱一点。人有多聪明，知道多少东西，聊一两个小时就能看得差不多了。能提出让大牛认真回答的问题，起码这学生还知道动动脑子。

一个在TOP20商院的full prof算是什么？如果没有famous到圈外人都知道的话

其实不一定是大牛，小牛就足可以了。
